I've found all sorts of help here on how to get one installed... but not so much on whether it's really worth the effort.
First off, has anyone using one had any serious issues with it? I'm told that putting an MSD ignition (not the DIS) on an F-body can burn up the car's Optispark among other things, requiring expensive repairs. Are there any simliar issues with putting them on an LD9?
Secondly, what results have people had using this with the GMSC? Since we're running a bigger gap (0.050) and have higher pressure in the combustion chamber, I'm thinking that having a stronger spark with longer duration can only be an improvement.
What I'm not so sure about is whether the programmable features such as spark retard are of any value or whether this is the sort of thing already being done by the GM ECM reprogram. Is there any further value from doing some sort of ignition tuning?
I really don't fully understand how that works in the first place. I know that when you're running boost you need to advance the timing a bit but if it's knocking, you may want to retard it. How does the MSD do this? Do you just tell it to permanently retard the timing or does it vary it based on some sort of sensor input?
Thanks guys! I'm still pretty new to understanding the engine's electrical systems so I'm ready to soak up the knowledge.
save your money and get a bigger t/b, and full exhuast and water injection and seceret cams.
Or just buy my programmable MSD DIS-2.

I was wondering the same thing, I didn't think we needed the benefits from being able to tune the DIS II, but I allways thought that the S/C could benefit from the stronger sparks, as well as the multiple sparks in the lower RPM range. I know my setup is running rich, and thought that better spark might help burn more of the gas.

Well tell us why you're selling it.
Looks like we've got more questions than answers here.

Because I am parting out the entire car.

First of all, I thought that I was hearing noises coming from inside the motor last week. I drove the car yesterday for the first time in 1 week, and I am not hearing the noises anymore. During the last couple of days, I decided that I wanted to sell all the stuff off of the car, pay off a few bills, and try another set up.

GP told me u are looking for a C5. that is sweet. good luck and keep us updated.
Yes sir, a C5.
Just as long as the insurance isnt too high, these are the only two cars that I want to see in the driveway.

I would say if your staying with the stock boost levels that you will be okay without spending the money on a dis 2. If however you switch out the pully and run higher boost a programmable msd dis 2 (part 6212) would be a great investment. I personally have it and find it incredable. If you get the 2 bar map sensor for the ignition you can retard the ignition based on the map sensor. Plus you can play with thing such as rev limitors, both top limit and a 2 step.
I don't have a supercharger though, I will be running a turbo.

WW,
you have any missfire problems at full throttle, hard driving, with plugs gapped at .050?

I don't think so, though it did pull timing a little on the dyno causing noticable dips in the graph.
I suppose that could have been from a misfire, though I have no real way of knowing without running it with a scanner.
So does anyone have some valid advice for this?
Does the GM program basically do everything you would expect to tune with the MSD short of amplifying the spark?
Would the multiple-spark over longer duration be of measurable benefit here or is it all a waste of money under these circumstances?
Anyone got real-world knowledge of this?
The Gm reflash already retards the timing alot. This is why I do not like the reflash (I understand GM had to set this up to save them selves for warranty issues), but there is many turboed LD9's with near stock timing. From my understanding the GM flash takes 4 degree's off the top, and another 2 for every PSI. Even if you have a smaller pulley the computer is seeing the extra boost, and taking timing for it.
WW I would save your money for other mods. Save it for the HPTUNERS software. I think once that comes out and some GMSC guys hit the dyno with it, that charger will wake up.

i was going to use the regualr 1 with out the boost retard on mine
i was going to use it once i get the alky injection
john , i drove my cav on 89 the night i installed it , and i beat the hell outta my cav that night , and it reved up better before i had the reflash done
when the reflash was done , the car reved up very slow
i do plan to up the timming in the lower rpm once the HP tuners , that should help out alot

once the HPTuners software is out there will be no need for a MDS (exceot for a stronger spark), but cause you will be able to set the timing where you want it.
Like I said once that is out the GMSC cars, and all boosted car will really come alive, but the GMSC ones I think will be the surprise.

Well that seems good enough for me then.
So there's no value in the stronger/longer spark?
Is the stock system more than capable of reliably bridging the 0.050 gap every time, even under boost?

If it was not GM would not have put the kit out. You can always shorten the gap some.
also supposely GM has a set of High performance coil packs for the 2.4. Not sure if you guys remember the 4 door red Z24, gM gave Edlerbrock?? In the write up on it in Sportcompact it listed mods. one of those were GM high performance coils packs. I have been in touch with one of my contacts at GM. he has tried to help me find more info on them. Still no luck. Would be nice if we could get them. From the pictures they were stock replacement.
