turbo trouble
Monday, September 05, 2005 9:15 PM
I just finished my turbo install, its running pretty good but Im not running it hard until I can get it tuned. Theres one big problem though. When I ran it after finishing it, it smoked alot. I'm quite sure it is oil smoke. What could the problem be? Do I need a restrictor for the oil feed, cuz maybe the oil is going past the bearings. Im I running too rich. Im I running too much boost? 7 PSI on stock internals, Intercooled, with upgraded fuel injectors, and FMU. How can I tell what is causing the oil burning, and how can I stop it? ANy help is much apreciated
Rex

A fresh turbo install will smoke a little bit. If it hasn't gone away after putting a few miles on it, we'll do more troubleshooting.

make sure your using the correct oil ...... regular 10 -30 or 5 -30 won't cut it ...... you need to jump to a 5 - 50 so the turbo won't burn your oil off my friends integra smoke at very first through the exhaust...... we changed the oil from mobil 1 5 -30 to Castrol Syntec 5 -50......... stopped smoking ....... I ran 5-5- from the day I got turbo on my 2200...... No smoke....

so .... check your oil ......

Im running 10-W40 castrol synthetic. It says that it is for use on "tosays adavanced engines" including multi valve, turbochargers, etc. SO i thought it would work. Should I see if I can get some pure 40 weight or something??? Also I am only running a DP for now cuz its legal in wyoming and I havent decided what type of exhaust I should get. When I pop the hood the smoke rolls out of the engine bay although it appears as if its all coming from the DP. I also used header wrap on my DP to keep the engine bay cooler. It said it would smoke for the first 5 minutes but its been longer than that. Ive driven probably about 10 miles on it so far.
Thanks,
Rex

what does the smoke smell like? what color is it? are you leaking anything?

the smoke is blueish, it smells burnt, possibly like oil. I had I tiny puddle of oil on the ground which came from around the oil return line, I tightened the bolts but maybe it was from the bearing housing itself rather than the return line??? I dont know. I also had a coolant leak but I fixed that by getting better hose clamps. Thanks for all your help.

its funny how many times i hear that you have to run different oil...yet my car runs best, and now only, on full synthetic 5W30 oil. i use royal purple personally but theres a few good brands out there

I used to race cars, now I race myself.

if you arnt running any restrictors, i would see first what your oil pressure is at the turbo somehow, i think your gonna need a restrictor.

Maybe your return line is too small also.

What size restrictor should I get and where can I get one? My return line is a 1/2 inch silicone tube with a 90 degree bend at the oil pan.

do i need one restristor on either end of line inlet line, or just one total? if just one, what side is best to put it on

i had to do both ends but thats for a eco and they are natorious for high oil pressure..i would try one first to see if it cures it, best to put it at the turbo end.

thanks for all the help. I'll try and pick up some restrictors today and let everyone know how it turns out

okay. I made my own adjustable valve-type restrictor. Still alot of smoke though. Ive tuned the restrictor back til its damn near closed but I dont want to hold back too much oil. I'm going to try putting in some pure 40 weight oil in and see how that does. What kind of problems should I expect in wyoming winters with that oil? And would side exhaust sound good on my car since its turbod. Im not running a cat (only in wyoming!!! : ) , so what type of resonator should I order?

I was impressed with my magnaflow resonator. i put it up to my mouth, screemed as loud as i could, and it sounded like a hum on the other side. haah. granted, exhaust is a lot louder, but it quieted things down a lot.
