what size charge pipes are you guys using for your custom turbo set-ups and can you weld a glange over a an externaly wastgated manifold to make it internal. just wondering if it would hold or not. also does it matter if i get a manifold that came off a 98 to go onto my 01?

2.25 or 2.5 inch piping will work wonderfully
as for manifolds... i don't really know what you are getting at. but the external wastegate flange would be located on the manifold. an internal wastegate would be mounted to the turbo itself. I don't think you can just patch up a hole like that. I know you can convert an internally wastegated manifold to external with the proper machine work and flange, but why go the other way?
I was a retard, and now I'm permanently banned.
not really ever gonna see high enough boost levels to warrant a exernal wastegate. i can do a internal wastgate then i am.

I have a 2.4 stainless manifold in the classifieds... It was modified from an external wastegate to an internal-- Now, that I think about- I should have just sold it, and bought an internal manifold..
Oh well, I'm selling it for pretty cheap too- you would just need to get the block flange resurfaced--

My buddy has both 2.5" and 3" i think.. not 100% sure why (maybe different sizes to the intercooler and another from it.) but i think 2.5" would be fine.

Sometimes it's better to go with smaller piping on the hot side and bigger on the cold side. The reason for it is less turbo lag. The charge pipes that Greddy sells for the sr20det are like that. It boils down to keeping the air velocity as high and consistent as possible. A T3 set up should be 2" or 2.25 hot side and 2.5" cold.
