boost&compression

i hear that the ecotec is better with boost but i was just looking at the specs and saw that the eco is 10:1 and the Z24 LD9 is 9.5:1. isnt lower compression better then high for boost and high better for N/A so how come the ECOTEC can do better with boost on stock internals.

thats not really proven that the ecotec handles boost better, People think it does because of the turbocharged ecotec motors in sabs, but thats not the exact same motor in the cavalier. For the most parts both engins handle boost equally as well. Both can only take about 10-12 PSI on stock internals. Lower compression is better for boost. Its really a personal choice. Ld9 has more low end grunt while the ecotec does better up top.

^^^ Agreed, although I thought it was only about 8psi that the engines could handle on stock internals?

True but if its tune'd good you can push a hair more boost

8PSI? 10-12 PSI?
well thats wrong right there...me, SunCavi, and DJ have all run much more than that. i have run 15PSI numerous times and i know DJ was tuning for close to 20PSI. all on stock ecotec internals.
the reason the ecotec is good is because of its design...i swear GM made this motor just for boosting purposes. Ive had the car make 200WHP on 6PSI with a 14:1 A/F ratio. this motor just loves to make power no matter what the A/F is. of course now im approaching 300WHP and the 12 second bracket.

I know SunCai is closer to 12s too

higher compression and boost makes more power.. but its harder to tune. more streetable with lower compression.

Oh ok, I wasn't 100% sure what the limits are on the stock internals, its good to finally know for sure for when I go boosted during the winter .

The ecotec will also have less heat soak because of the aluminum block...

awesome cuz my ld9 is at 9psi and ill be upgradin to an 04 eco soon well a year soon or an 05 and jsut wanted to kno my boosting limits and if they are alil higher with stock internals vs my 2.4

PSI asside, stock rods will snap on either motor once you hit a certain HP, that limit is around 250 is seems for the 2.4 and a little higher for the Eco. Once you start to build the motors, however, the playing field lowers.

My opinion: For NA go with the 2.4, cheap mods to increase NA power like the secret cams, manifolds, exhaust (yes, the 2.4 and 2.2 OHV exhaust are the same)

for boost, I would go with an eco if I had a choice. But I blew my 2.4 on 12psi so I figured might as well build that so we shall see in another month or two

I was over the MAGIC 250 mark on my 02..... and the rods where fine, just ran ALOT lean once, and toasted some pistons....

If its tuned, these engines hold to alot of power stock..... (at least double stock)

the cylinder head in a eco flows alot better than most heads out there
