turbo install.......... help asap???
Wednesday, August 03, 2005 6:53 PM
I have been trying to get my turbo project done the past week and I have run into so many stupid problems that this isn't even fun anymore. Way more problems than someone doing this would normally see. Well my new motor has been in and out at least a dozen times with a little modification every time. Well the major problem now is the inlet on the compressor side is about an inch or two away from the stupid shift linkage bracket. I have an auto so I dont think that cable can be in any other angle because the lever wont hit the right gear..ie, park, drive etc.

My question is can the oil inlet be on the bottome of the turbo and the drain be on the top??? That is the only way I see this frickin thing working...is to reposition the turbo so the exhaust side is by the linkage...unless someone has another idea for me.

This sucks so bad...this was supposed to be a semi-easy install but ever since I started it has been one big nightmare!!! I just want my car back and be boosted. Total I have spent around 5 grand on all the pieces of my kit and motor. Thinking that it would work...well after all this... I wish I would have just bought a complete kit from one of the companies and sacrificed performance for something that I know would work.

But If anyone has any ideas please...I am open to ANYTHING!!! Its a 96 Z24 auto.

Your question is alitte hard to follow. Seems like your overlookin a couple easy fixes tho.

1. Dont use an air filter just stainless steel screen. I have a piece of hydraulic filter steel on my compressor inlet.

2. Put your turbo on the other way but spin the center section. You know you can reposition the 3 sections of the turbo however you want??

do not put the oil feed on the bottom.

Turbo's are gravity drain, you want the drain on the bottom, and the feed in the top. You can clock your cold side any angle you want though.

Yeah ..... I already reclocked my compressor side once...but it looks to me that the exhaust side and the oil drain/feed middle section are one piece though. So in order to leave my oil feed on the top I would have to leave that whole section clocked how it is. I could be wrong but that is how it looked before...its very frustrating cause my garage is 10 miles away!!! But thanks a bunch for the ideas...keep em' coming please.

Ironically, I have just gone through exactly what you are talking about. I reclocked my turbo so that the air inlet is on the passanger side. There was absolutely no place to put a filter.

For mine, as I assume it is with most turbos, it came apart as 4 parts: compressor housing, oil area, exhaust housing, and the actual exhaust/downpipe thing. For me to switch it around, I had to recut/reweld the exhaust pipe, and allow my wastegate to be below the turbo. Both weren't a problem. I kinda wanted to run piping below my car, but the wastegate is now in the way, so all the same.

Since then, I've had to cut out that big metal A/C can. The metal lines from in were directly in the middle of the intake area. I'm researching my options for different hoses to replace the metal lines. Just givin' you a heads up on that, even after reclocking, there isn't a whole lot of room.

Best of luck though man, I feel your pain. I dunno how much help I can be, but feel free to email if you want to brainstorm.

nope center section is seperate from the exhaust side and cold side, the same way you clocked the cold side you can clock your exhaust side.

hey if it was easy everyone would do it! Trust me it will be worth it in the end.

well good news...me, a couple friends and a retired john deere engineer along with a couple cases of beer succesfully re-routed the whole auto trans cable and linkage so now I have room for my inlet side...thank god! We had to make a new bracket and extend the cable. The tranny shifts in and out of all the gears just fine. If all goes well...the motor will be in tomorrow night. Then we hook up everything and plumb the sfmu in on saturday...then sunday tune!!!
