I was wondering if water injection can ruin the throttle position sensor. my tps just stopped working. I think it may be from too much water injection. I get readings of 0% to 16% at full throttle with my scan tool. car has 78,000 miles. and it worked fine before the water injection.
As with ANY piece of electronics, it can just stop working.
Water would have nothing to do with it, considering that the sensor is attached to the throttle plate outside of the throttle body opening itself.
I just took off the sensor and it is full of water. enough said.
Where are you spraying your water? I'm not an expert at this, but my understanding is that the water is suppose to atomize with the air before it hits the TB. You must be spraying a ton of water and it must not be evaporating very well if your throttle position sensor is full of water.
that is weird
your injector too big? is your water injection system not hooked up right/ like it is always on ?
i will keep a eye on mine. but i know it is a fine mist and i know people who run fuel through the t/b and no issues. nitrous too.
maybe i will take mine apart and see if/how water can get in there. i am not too worry'd about it though.
also i know/ read about TONS of srt 4's, dsm's , honda's, wrx's, evo's who all inject H20 INTO their throttle body's and i havent heard of a problem like this.
80k miles, i would assume your TPS Sensor went bad. Maybe you washed your engine bay once and water some how got in there?
i will go take a look at my TPS and see how/ if water can get in there.
ya, just ripped apart the t/b and put it back together here in 5 mins. lol.
anyways, from what i seen, there is a HAIR gap around the t/b butterfly plate shaft. And as ron said there is a rubber gasket around/in the Tps. I personally cant see how a properly functioning water injection set up can get water in there.
SO in conclusion, i think that your water injection system is spraying when it shouldnt be, or your inector is too big(dont think that matters), OR you just dumped a gallon of water into your t/b.
maybe the IAC motor can get water on it, but that is on the top of the t/b, where water wont get to or have a chance to get to, or sit and "puddle" , but with the water injection i bet that will clean it all out.
maybe his injector is spraying right at the area where the shaft runs towards the tps sensor , and forcing water past the o-ring seal for it
naa^ that isnt possiable . If u see how much of a fine mist them injectors produce you would understand.
By any chance did you just wash your engine bay without covering the TB or try to use your Cavalier as a boat in a large puddle?
The reason I ask is because back in May, I decided to wash my engine bay and totally disregarded the fact that I was missing the Weatherpack gasket on the TPS sensor connector. I started the car after washing and it would just flat out die once in closed loop. What was going on? Well, since I was missing the gasket, I managed to fill the entire TPS sensor with water!! Fun stuff.
When the proper gaskets are in place, the TPS sensor is air tight against the throttle body. Nothing can get in or out of it. This is because moisture can corrode the sensitive metal contacts inside of the TPS sensor over time.
Alcohol injection has nothing to do with the problem except the fact that it might be bringing a gasket problem of yours to light.
