Tuesday, August 02, 2005 5:38 PM
Hey guys,

Before i install my used gm s/c, should i be concerned of its oil level? What type of oil does it take? Is there a way to check it? As anyone changed the s/c oil before??

thanks!

Officially, you're not supposed to ever need to change it.

Everyone I've ever talked to that has experience with Magnusson blowers though says that you should change it.

Unfortunately, you pretty much have to remove it to change it and anyone who's put one on knows that's not a trivial task.

So I'm not really sure how to answer your question.

Do you know how many miles are on it? If it's more than 20k or so, then it would probably be prudent to change it before installing it since you can do it easily while it's off the car. I have no idea how much to put in though.

Old eaton charger oil smells very much like ass. I would change it regularily simply to avoid that rancid stench in the future. Seriously.

There's a neat trick to remove the oil. Put a flexible tube in the resevoir, then run compressed air passed the end of this tubing to create a siphen.

Be prepared for a very offensive smell.

i can only imagine how bad its going to smell

my 68 elcamino came with a posi from the factory , and the additive they used makes the gear oil absoultely rancid , i bough it back in 1987 and it had never been changed , granted it only had 26,000 on it

id say to change it every year or so , just to keep up on how the s/c is doing

ok. I think i know where the drain plug is on the s/c.

Just need to know how much. I would try to pour it out and measure that, but that almost never works.

The Grand Prix uses a bigger blower so the amount of oil it uses is irrelevant here.

I know, but not sure if i would need to get 1l of oil, or just 1- 4 oz bottle. Was thinking that if i knew what the grand prix used, then i could gauge how many bottle i would have to buy (obviously less then what it needs).

Make sense?

When I took mine apart to get it polished there was about 2.5oz in it. When I put it back together I just filled it to the bottom of the drain hole with the blower (not the whole manifold , the blower itself) setting in a horizontal plane. It took about 3oz to fill it...

Some of the GTP guy's around here say to change it about every 15,000mi. And it will sound a little different right after the oil is changed for some reason so don't worry about that if it does.

Maintainence free my ass especially if your gonna be whipping the @!#$ out of it and racing it and possibly putting a supercharger UD pulley on it you need to change it every once in a while. I know its overkill but i change mine pretty much with every oil change. Why you ask? Why not if you get the oil for free?

K. good news.
Stopped by the local gm dealership on the way home from work today. They had one in stock. 7.18 canadian for a bottle. I was told to fill it just till you can see it, or the plug touches the fluid.

Sweet.

rule of thumb. when you change your crankcase oil, change your blower oil. make it an afternoon project.

like they said if you use a hose and use a air hoes to blow into the hose you can drain it on the car , and you can fill it

i cant on mine cause the fill port is on the lower side of the s/c , 1 of the small disadvantages to having a proto tpye s/c , LOL

I went to GM today, all they had were tiny ass bottles, I'm assuming 3 oz? I'm also wondering where this plug is, though I must admit I'm not looking for it at the moment, just trying to get a visual in my head.

...and when filling you'd hold it in the same position it'd be sitting at while on the car I assume?

I imagine this is what you meant Gary when you said "setting in a horizontal plane".
