if that works then awesome

run it in 3rd gear.
or do the vss mod.
Couple years back i had my car on the dyno in 4th gear with the speed limiter switch hooked up. car was doing 120mph right in front of me, lol.
Dyno it in 1st gear...

I swear this place is getting worse and worse. Dyno in first gear???? I hope that was a joke. Also second gear??? Email me I will tell you how to do it.

No joke. Nothing wrong with dynoing a fwd car in first gear.

Just unplug it for your run, no need to put the switch in.
Or run in 3rd.

The gear ratio is way off, not close to a 1 to 1 ratio.
Truly telling someone to run first gear because We are scared of Dave and the Big bad mods is crazy!!!!
Everyone al;ways says when you have enough power, or a real reason to them come talk. When someone has a reason no still wants to tell. This is a forum for getting info to help make your car better, faster, whattever.

can you dyno a car in reverse? seriously.
It doesn't matter what gear you dyno in. I see have seen in person the a car on a dyno dyno back to back in different gears and produce the exact same numbers. I've even dynoed my own car in first gear.

I have seen a 5 speed turbo 2.2 ohv make a dyno run in 3rd gear and in 4th gear with no changes made between the two runs. The dyno showed more power on the 3rd gear pull than on 4th gear pull. I even think that the a/f was a little bit leaner on the 4th gear pull.
I have always heard to dyno in 4th gear since it is the closest to a 1:1 ratio.
275hp & 306tq - 1999 2.2 ohv
13.2 @ 108 mph
-1996 2.4 liter + Turbo + Built motor + Torco + More boost = Lots o' Power
-2000 Mustang GT + 2004 Cobra motor, Whipple 2.3 supercharger,
built rear-end,Dodge Viper spec T56 6 speed, bolt-ons = wheelies at the track!!!!!
They should be able to program into the dyno what gear ratio depending on what gear you plan to run in....

dynoing in lower gears is harder on the dyno.....not too big an issue with our cars because we dont make a ton of torque or have a really high final gear ratio. But a more powerfull car with say a 2.xx or 3.xx final drive will overheat a dyno quick.
Why dyno a turbo car in first gear???So you can spin onthe dyno??? I have always heard 4 gear for the 1 to 1 ratio. I have also seen a car dyno in 3 and in 4 with different number. In the past when one of my J's was dynoed I did it in 3. I plan to dyno my n/A car soon, and will do both 3 and 4.

You want to dyno in whatever gear is closest to 1:1 if possible. With our cars it may not be possible wihtout hitting the speed limiter. Another option would be to do your dyno run at a place that has a Tech2 and just turn the damn limiter off during the run.

No tire slip, dyno in any gear.

what if you do not have that type of dyno in your area? There is 3-4 dyno's in my town none like that one.

Sorry, i had to post that.
I am most likely wrong but i was under the impression that most dynos were able change loads for different gearing.

Jeremy that is THE most stupid thing I have EVER heard YOU say!!
Dyno in 1st gear.
For the guy that wants to dyno, you are doing it in 4th and I assume your car doesn't have THAT much power so it will take WAAAAAAAAY too long. lol
Do it in 3rd, if you want to do it in 4th just unplug the VSS sensor to disable the speedo for the dyno runs and then you have to plug it back in for the ride home because from my experience it makes the car run weird as hell.
As you can see Every time I go to the track I have to do the same otherwise I WILL hit the govr. before the end of the 1/4 mile. Sucks
John, I have dynoed mine and acctually I dynoed 3rd at 209hp back when I was at 9 psi and 4th at 211hp, go figure. lol I think it is up to your set up, and your car pretty much.
The numbers SHOULD stay pretty much the same like 1-2 hp difference nothing to be concerned with.
MY CAR WILL SPIN tires on the dyno in 1st possiblly second, cause the way in ATE up the 3rd gear on the dyno in like 4-5 seconds I was like DAMN!!
We did one pass in 2nd
just to let you guys know and dyno freaked out and the car put down 200 hp and that was on 12 psi, when my 3rd put down like 255.
The dyno guys said it spun tires, I was like whatever, don't do it again it ain't right.lol

It has less to do with how much power you have in any gear, but power at 1 to 1 ratio. To get a true accounting for your power.
Suncavi hook the switch up for your speedlimiter, so you do not have to unplug the VSS.

Dyno in 1st gear.
The only dyno experience i have is with a Dynapack brake dyno. Most tuning shops in my area use this dyno. The Dynapack dyno is able to adjust braking resistance for ANY gear ratio so it does not matter what gear you run in. It also bolts directly to your hubs after removing the wheels so wheel spin is simply impossible. Like i said above, i am probably wrong but i was under the impression that most dyno's could set to your actual gearing rather than just guessing which one is best. For people with a automatic transmission such as myself, dynoing in higher gears such as 3rd would just result in the trans downshifting into 2nd as soon as you hit WOT and only being able to get power reading from around 4500 rpm to redline......
