nasty turbo manifold

Hey guys

Some of you know I bought a red grand am with a custom turbo setup on it. Well right off the bat i knew there was a nasty exhaust leak on it... sounded bad and stunk inside car.

Looking at the exhaust manifold while it was on the car it looked like a bad welding job so today i pulled off the turbo, then the manifold and wow... the manifold just flat out sucks. Whoever welded this thing should get / be fired from whatever place they work at.

Theres several cracks in it... and a few pin holes if you look down the turbo flange you can see light coming in from the bottom of the manifold... its bad. So its getting sent out to get re-made with a guarantee of no cracking.

Later this week my new gauges go in, along with the new engine mounts and tranny mounts. Then when the manifold gets back here I'll hook up the wideband (which i need to order) then I can get some tuning done.

Its the first big step, and im excited...
Here are pics of the trash manifold that was on the car:

Custom turbo manifold welding job from a shop in Minnesota not purchased by me... Id demand money back if I paid someone to make that... yeah its homemade though from an exploited manifold it LOOKS to me anyways.

No I live in Wisconsin. I bought the car from someone in Minnesota who had all the work on this car done by "Pro's" in Mankato. The setup did work but now it wont build boost because the manifold has so many leaks in it.

I bought the car and I am redoing the setup.

mig welding for pressure vessels is stoopid.

I'm pretty sure thats what it is. Just took it into the metal shop to get all welds removed and its getting re-welded with stainless welds. I know the square tubing going to the turbo isn't the best design, but it will work. I'll post pics of it after its re-made.

you don't just weld mild steel with stainless welds. not sure what you meant there.

I'm not sure what I meant there either... the metal shop is taking care of it though and I'll post pics of it when I get it back...

I've seen that manifold in the local paper, in the human interest stories. The headline read "Blind Veteran Learns Welding." But I thought it was only a practice piece!
