LD9 Turbo Build-up
Friday, July 01, 2005 12:49 AM
Well motor has been taken apart for a while now, and I am gathering parts for the rebuild!

ENGINE:
Eagle H-Beams
Wisco 8.5:1 forged
Clevite bearings
Copper head gasket
P&P Head, stock valves 3angle job, stock springs
lighter lifters
new crankshaft
Secret cam swap
2.5" exhaust plans

TURBO:
Caltec FMU
Accel FPR
FMIC - pretty good one
36#, 42# and 52# injectors for tuning purposes
E-Manage

Now my question is should I keep the e-manage? I had some issues with ignition tunning last time, but I guess the problems have been resolved (installed mine over a year ago) I am afraid of fuel problems, don't know if the FPR, FMU and injectors will be tuneable for my plans of 15-20psi

Also, I have been debating between a few turbo's, a T04E 40 trim, T04E Super-40, or a T04B S or V trim. If anyone has any input, let me know what you think. I am afraid I will not be able to spool a T04E, even if it's just a 40 trim.

So what are suggestions for fuel mods for big turbo's, and what size should I stop at?

ohh yea, and I have a log manifold, but I don't like it, so I will be buying a new one. I think I should go external waistegate, but is it worth it?

And the car is a '98 5-speed. Broke my last motor with 60k miles, 30k of which on boost, hope this build goes better!

I would not use the Accel APFR. I had one that went bad after about 6 months of boost, and a few others have had the same thing happen. Not so good for boost set-ups.

To run the boost you are talking about you will need finer tuning that just a AFPR, and FMU. Either add in a SAFC for the finer tuning, or use a megasquirt, or keepe the emange.

Also you will need a bigger fuel pump as well.

What are lighter lifters? I don't know of anyone that makes anything but OEM spec lifters for our engines.

Keep the E-Manage. Add the 330ohm resistor (or whatever your sensor's sweet spot is) to your map sensor and you should be off and running just fine.

Ditch the FMU and throw in only the 546cc injectors. The E-manage will run them just like it's stock if you use the injector compensation feature.

new crankshaft

No reason for a new crank.. unless by new you mean a new sotck one since your current stock one might be bad....

Already have the 255lph pump installed. And yea my stock crank got owned, I will get some pics up when I can lets just say I couldn't keep much of anything off the old motor except the block and cams.

The copper head gasket is comming with the gasket kit, so it says at least, it hasn't arrived yet so we shall see.

Now last time with the e-manage I could tune the 550cc injectors decent durring boost, but whenever the car was at idle it was extremely rich, that's why I got the FPR, hopefully to drop pressure at boost. I am kind of pissed now, I took the entire emanage out of the car, and now I just get to put it back in, hopefully the write up is a bit better now at least for the ignition part of it...

I don't know about ditching the FMU unless you guys can swear that the emanage works great for a lot of boost, I was thinking about keeping it in for safety.

Two last things, my bonus comes in today and I was wondering if anyone has any feedback on the turbo size and waistegate, also what is a good company for a wideband?

FMU's are not good for anything past 6 or 7 lbs of boost, simply because of the amount pressure they increase the fuel by.

I could be wrong.

The Emanage and larger injectors would be the best bet for your setup.

Flatlander Racing has one.

I actually ordered the kit from here it comes with wiseco pistons of choice and bore, all clevite bearings, COMPLETE FELPRO gasket set, the flatlander racing copper head gasket, complete timing set (with new chain), lots of assembly lube, performance moly rings and wrist pins, new lifters, all the jazz except for cams and rods. It cost me $999 but all I had to do was call them, and when I am putting in over 120 hours at work it is nice to just go to one place. So far everything has come in very fast and the support those guys have is awesome. All I am waiting on is the pistons.

You can stick all that money into the engine, but then cheap out when it comes to the truly important stuff, ie fuel and timing control. A standalone fuel computer, like the TEC3 would be the best route.

O noes!

I know nobody who is using a TEC3 personally, but have heard good things. My concern is where to get it, how much, and the install/tuning.

try to talk to crash, he used to have on on his sunfire back in the day, it was a Bit h to tune but when he got it, the car finely ran good.

what about the haltech, it is cheaper it seems and is a stant alone for fuel and timing with boost. I am planning to get a wideband so some of the TEC3's features are just too much. Does anyone have anything about them?
