Turbo setup questions
Wednesday, June 08, 2005 10:02 PM
First off I have a 96 z24 with 115K miles. But I am building a motor as we speak. I have some questions about the setup I am going with. Its going to be turbo and front mount intercooled. I am going with the ported head for sure. I was wondering if the secret cams work well with a turbo setup? If they do I will put those in also. Then for the pistons and rods I am debating about forged internals or not. Has anyone ever used just forged pistons on stock rods. If they have what boost levels are they running? Otherwise what boost levels and hp levels are guys running stock pistons and rods? And I was also wondering if buying a kit is better or buying everything seperate. Where can I buy just the manifold or just the turbo? Because I would like to mix and match instead of the kit. Basically I want to be around the 250-300 horsepower range. I plan on doing injectors( probably car customs 320cc) and fuel pump and safc. I have a rebuilt auto tranny with the solid motor mounts and transceptor. I was thinking around 12-14 maybe even 16 psi. Please give me some info on what you guys are running and what internals you have. Any info would help. Thanks.

115K miles is a lot to beat on with boost, especially if you want to run 250 - 300 hp. you will most definately need to build the internals with forged pistons and rods. forged pistons on stock rods will not help you much since the weak part is the stock rod anyways. i've heard secret cams will work pretty well with a turbo and i will be dropping a set in my turbo engine as well. as far as boost goes, i've heard of people running up to 12psi on stock internals, and thats perfectly tuned. but i personally wouldnt boost more than 8-10 psi unless you're forged if you want the engine to last more than a few weeks. buying parts seperate will be cheaper for you than getting a full kit...plus, like you mentioned, you can mix and match parts, instead of paying for parts you dont want to use in a kit. i've gotten almost everything on ebay for my custom turbo kit, you can find some pretty decent parts for cheap. but you'll definately want to invest in a good turbo...either brand new or rebuilt inside and out. a 255 lph fuel pump is a good thing to have but 320cc injectors might be a little small for 250-300hp. you could bump it up to 370cc or a little bigger and tune it down with the SAFC. I also suggest an adjustable FMU like the one from cartech so that you can tune the fuel curve based on boost, not just rpms with the SAFC. also getting that high into boost and power levels you should look into getting the MSD DIS 2 with boost retard to tune ignition timing as well. if you have any other questions, feel free to ask...someone here will be more than willing to help

thanks for the info. Where can i get forged internals besides carcustoms? And who all makes turbo manifolds for the LD9? I looked into getting the msd dis 2 but i am not sure what one to get. I work at NAPA so it is available through them but which exact model of the DIS 2 works best for my setup? They claim they plug right into the stock harness, but who knows? I am on aol as turbozee24 if anyone is on that is already boosted I would love to talk to them about their setup and the problems they had. I went to dropfest last weekend hoping to get some info, but not one jbody was boosted there. I was dissapointed.

^ Exactly. If you plan on running a lot of boost and are looking for a high HP range, I'd DEFINITELY suggest changing out your internals and getting your engine completely ready before you go with boost. Let me know if you have any questions or need anything: admin@cavalierextreme.com
