Ive done a search about this and it seems to be in aurgument. ive seen a few who have both. If you put the filter directly on the turbo, is there a sound difference or even a power difference vs. having an actual intake tube preventing the turbo from forcing hot air in the pipes. id like to be able to here the turbo spool better BUT i dont want to lose any power due to a little sound. what do you guys think.
TURBO KIT...$4,000
RUNNING 20 PSI...ANOTHER $2,000
SMOKING THE TIRES ON A 3RD GEAR ROLL...PRICELESS
you could probably get just as much sound coming from an intake tube with the filter located away from the turbo and manifold to get cooler air. i would think its not that much of a difference since the sound will resonate through the tube.

I designed and BARELY fit a custom intake on my LD9 turbo setup... it goes to where the stock airbox was...
To be honest, I don't know how ANYBODY fits a filter back there, there was barely enough room for the pipe itself.
I wouldn't go any other way, personally... as I have my catch can line hooked up to the intake and it gets COLD air from my ram air hood as opposed to burning hot air beside the turbo.

ehhhh just do what all the real racers (myself included honestly) do with their turbo projects. take a piece of screen and use hose clamps or somethin to tighten it to the compressor inlet... REALLY tight.

Um. Right... I'm not going to run a screen on my turbo... it's personal preference, just like some people won't run a CAI, you know?
I'd rather have at LEAST a filter on there.

you are right, it is personal preference, and that's understandable. i just never drove my turbo'd car in anything other than perfect non-dusty conditions.

this is quite true. i'd say it depends on the compressor inlet and your air filter. if it fits, then it fits. if not, get a pipe made.

All I know is, when I put my filter on the turbo, it melted, the base of it. Yes it was K&N.
I think a pipe would be better since u can locate it in a better place to get colder or more air. (Although with air induction u usually have enough suction power to get enough air).

and just that reason is why the exhaust belongs on the front side of the engine.

see the turbo i have and the way my manifold was it didnt fir with the air outlet facing up which most of the turbo setups ic have. my pipes go under my car because my turbo only fit that way for the DP to work. the turbo was alil large. but my intake side is opposite of yours so i have much room to run an intake. ill send pictures once my setup is done i had to do some relocated..and i prefer an intake even if its not daily driven sound wise it will change the sound alittle intakes tend to whistle so with the intake to the turbo my sound changed alittle i could hear a lot more also my turbo was customized by my dads friend and it spools louder then a few of my friends turbos.

Exact same thing happened to me, the base of my K&N melted when i had my filter mounted directly to the compressor housing.
Now i use a 90 degree elbow pointing straight down heavily wrapped in reflective heat wrap connecting my filter to the turbo.
