Internal Wastegate

If I buy a turbo with an internal wastegate is there a way to adjust the boost? Is so.. what are the disadvantages/advantages of an internal one vs an external one ?

thanks for your answers.

You have more control and better accuracy when upping the boost with a external wastegate. But yes, you can run a boost controller off of an internal gate. Either a manual or electronic controller can be used. Depending on how much boost you are going to run, a internal gate is cheaper and takes less exhaust piping and manifold customizing to run. But , like I said , it all depends on what you want to do with your application. Do some research and see what fits u best. good luck.

I have a more specific question...

At what amount of boost does the internal wastegate flap open? My friend said if you connect the vac line right to the compressor housing- it will push air until your car blows up...

I know a boost controller would be necessary, but when does it open?

It all depends on the actuator

Some can be adjustable with a threaded rod, other are permanent

Most typically are set to 7psi

Yeah, you can get 4psi actuators, 6psi, 8, and I think the highest I've seen was 10 or 12 psi actuators.

Your friend is wrong. Many turbo's have fittings right on the compressor housing just for the wastegate. The pressure that gets created in the compressor housing is the same anywhere else in the system, and it makes it nice not having to run so much vac line.

The thing with internal wastegates are that at higher pressures, you can get a lot more boost creep. Boost creep is what happens when the wastegate can't let the air out fast enough to stop the pressure from building more pressure. When you start experiencing boost creep, you know its time for an external wastegate system with a larger opening (38mm or bigger).

the internal wastegate basicly is a swingvalve assembly that goes between the turbo and the exhaust pipe...it bolts directly to the turbo ..then you bolt your exhaust downpipe to it. There is usually a single medal hopse nipple off the comp. housing that goes to the int. wastegate actuator (plunger canister looking thing) that has a arm on it. Once that see's a certain PSI it will start extending the arm to open the valve insde the swingvalve assembly. Which re-routes the exhaust from your engine around the turbine wheel hence to stop making it spin faster to create more boost...

You can pick up a swingvalve assembly (internal wastegate) off of ebay used for around $50.00 or maybe buy a turbo with it already on it..they sell just actuators also your gonna need that are around the same price maybe cheaper..and are usually adjustable from 5PSI to about 15 PSI...I would say use internal wastegate becuase there cheaper and simpler to put into your system. I would start to think about ext. if you do experience boost creep or if you plan on pushing more then 8-10 PSI.

For those who are permanent can't we simply just replace it by an ajustable one?

If I buy an internally wastegated turbo can I only take out the internal wastegate and replace it by an external one later if I experience boost creep as said before?

Yes you can replace it, but you have to make sure it is for your turbo

And yes, you can go external later down the road. You just have to reweld some stuff; like your manifold and downpipe.

does neone have a picture of one to post? i dont know if mine is internal or external. i just have a straight manifold without anyother flange on it besides the turbo one. is the internal or is it on the turbo?

That thing with the rod and the round cylinder at the top of the turbo is the internal wastegate.

ok. mine has an internal wastegate then. so that limits the psi i can run? thats suxs balls! bc my motor should be able to hold about 15 or so.

^ Just use a manual boost controller then, you should be able to turn it up all the way to the limits of the turbo.

ok good. thats what i was planed on doing but i got scared for a min thinking i could only run low psi. thanks man.
