Exhaust downpipe size

I can get a guy to bend me some stainless up to 3.5 for my down pipe is that too big? I am planning on running that until after the cat where it then turns into 2.5. Should I go 3.5 for as long as I can or will I be reducing too much when I connect to the rest of the exhaust system? Oh and the cat thats gotta go right?

3.5" on a 2.4L, or a 2.2L eco is too large. Stick to 3" if you are running significant boost.

Why bend a 3.5" downpipe if you are only going to run a 2.5 from the catback??? Only run a 3" downpipe if you are going to run the 3"catback to support it. The rule of thumb is you can always go up in size on the exhaust for a turbo not down. So you can do a 2.5" downpipe to a 3" catback, but NOT what you suggested

No, the cat does not have to go. I have a 3" Magnaflow cat

the bigger the pipe the better...but go with that size the whole way through or go bigger after the cat like Jason said ^^^ its not a good idea to go down in size anywhere in the exhaust, especially in a turbo car. so if you can fit the 3.5" under the car, go for it.

a high flow cat will improve flow. ditching the cat will improve flow even more.

I don't know your setup but 3.5 sounds like overkill to me. 3 inch too!
