3800 series II sc swap
Monday, April 25, 2005 8:33 AM
So I bought myself an L67 this weekend. It's purdy. I'm going to spend the majority of the summer and fall doing prep for the install and considering my car is my daily driver, the install will be done over winter break when I'm off school for a whole month and I've got time to do all of the fabrication.

I've got some questions regarding the fabrication however raven hasn't answered my e-mail so I figured I'd post it up on here. I'm not sure how many other 3rd gen owners have performed this swap. I'm sticking with the L67's 4spd AOD by the way.

Question 1: Could the RKS dogbone solid mounts for the J-bodies be used for the upper 2 mounts (with fabricated brackets)? I've got one already, just order another one instead of custom making 2 dogbone mounts and bushings.

Question 2: Does the pcm need to be custom tuned for the swap?

Question 3: WTF to do about gauges. I read that the 3800 PCM will not read the J-body gauges.

Question 4: How to gain traction?

Thanks guys.

Sorry if I didn't get your email or didn't get back to you. I get some many general questions about this swap everyday it's sometimes hard to keep up.

1. Don't use dog bones unless you want to tube the front of the car.

2. For an automatic it shouldn't have to be tuned but it makes a nice difference.

3. Get new ones.

4. Poly bushings, proper alinment, track bars...and learn how to launch it.

but you used dogbone mounts for the front of your car. what do you suggest?

and for the gauges, what all is involved into swapping the GTP gauge cluster into the J-body or what gauges do you recommend?

thanks man

and i forgot to add, for the CV shafts, which to use or must they be fabricated as well? I am planning on using the GTP 4spd AOD.

Yes I did use dog bones but after tearing the sh#t out of the rad support (even after strengthening it) we redesigned the mounts and everything is now now mounted from the bottom and works well. I would only recommend dog bones if you are going to tube the front of the car to support them.

I would recommend using aftermarket gauges in a custom cluster or use the GTP cluster but it is much larger in size that the j cluster.

The axles will have to be redone. I haven't done this personally but I know that the CV joints of the two axles are the same so you should be able to rebuild a custom axle out of the two. If you can't let me know and I can put you in contact with someone who can do it for you.

Why would the axles not work? Id assume all you would need to do is get the gtp hubs as well and you should be good to go . .. unless I am not seeing something ?

i'm planning on using the GTP 4spd tranny anyways. my question was the width and making sure the tranny was mounted in the exact correct position. so i should be able to use the GTP axles and hubs right?

I would ASSUME that you CAN use it but again I am not 100% sure.

i would ask raven about that but I know he used the cavy 5spd tranny. I have a nerve problem in my leg and am physical unable to drive a manual. So I have to drive autos all my life

You will have to change out the outter axle and use the cavy wheel hub. The CV joints are the same so you should be able to put the two together. Again I haven't done this first hand so it might not be possible but it looks good to me.

so i'd be using the cavy outer axle or the GTP outer axle?

The cavy outer axle..the splines in the hub are smaller than the GTP hub.

ok right on. so the GTP 4spd would be a decent choice of transmission to use with that hub and axle setup correct?

It should be but like I have said before I haven't done it first hand so I have no clue. I can tell you that the diff, input and output shafts are the week links in that tranny.

You should be fine for 300 without any worrys. You may have to replace it every few years depending on how you drive.

i will probably rarely ever give it more than 1/2 on the throttle on the street unless i've gained traction and need to show a mustang how it's done. but i know where i can pick up another tranny if it's necessary every few years.

Raven:

1) Did you need to modify in any manner your tranny to fit this motor?

2) Could the a/c system be mounted or their is no free space under the hood?

3) In order to do this swap I have to use a GTP cumputer right?

Thanks for your help!!!!!

1. Nope the tranny needs no modifications to fit.

2. The a/c system can be run, there is plenty of room for the a/c compressor but running the lines would be a pain.

3. You can use a stock computer if you are going to leave the car automatic. If you want a 5-speed if will need to be tuned.

Again, Thanks for your help!!!!!

Well right now I am running a bit rich so I will lean it out a bit to make more power. I am also going to play with the timing to see how much I can advance it from stock to gain even more power...all without seeing any KR of course. Other things that I want to change would be the noise floor on the knock sensors and the knock attack recovery rates but that is a whole other area for tuning. I am getting the DHP powertuner for my computer. It allows me to custom tune my own computer with a laptop. I can change over 200 different parameters in the computer as well as full data logging abilities.

regarding the AC, is there an AC delete option because I don't feel like messing with it honestly.

You can buy the a/c delete pully from either Intense($99.99) or Thasher($299.99). Or you can just make your own like we did. We ended up using a pulley from an old ford truck.

i'll just throw down the 100.00 and buy a pulley. one less thing we'll have to make.
