Got Her Back And Have Odd Fuel Problems... Ideas?
Sunday, April 24, 2005 12:31 PM
Ok car is done runs great!! I am really impressed with the work cnfx did. I have some fuel issues though that need some adressing. so far my fuel mods are saab 370cc injectors and a vortech fmu with 6:1, 7:1,8:1 and 12:1 discs. I have my fpr set to 40 and can go as low as 36.

with the 12:1 and injectors in it idles picture perfect, yes I have the innovate wideband. it bounces from mid 13's to about a 15.2 or so. hit boost goes to 7.4 and leans out till about mid 9's or so before I have to shift.

any other disc is worse. all the other 3 it idles at 7.4 af and doesnt move from there until I am deep into the rpms under boost when it leans up a bit. and it barely idles.

I am very confused the only logical thing I can think of is to lower my base pressure some more.

Please people that dislike me just leave me be, or put in good input. thanks.

I wanna see finished pictures... even though it doesn't have anything to do with addressing your fuel probs!

Could it be the disc's you have are marked wrong? Or not made correctly? Are those discs actually from Vortech or did someone knock it off?

they are knock offs, but look identical to the disc in there except for the diameter

If you have a fuel pressure gauge it should show you if the different discs are doing what they are supposed to do, although it sounds like they aren't. Also, the FMU should have no affect on anything when the motor is not under boost.

I'd try the stock injectors with the FMU and see what kind of results that gives you.

with as rich as he is running he will do more damage with the raw fuel than he will with up to 10 psi

the raw fuel will wash the rings down , and cause massive amounts of blow by , and eventually kill the motor , plus the raw fuel will kill the cat converter

excess raw fuel will also be a cause for a fire

my personal experence and knowlage , is the amout fuel need to drop , wether you give it more air or lean it out with the fmu disk or smaller injectors

chad is running in the 11 on his wide band gauge now that he fixed his boost leak , with 320 cc injectors

qbe has 370 cc injectors , and is running way to rich , and with the fuel he has 10 psi is still safe

or he needs to change the injectors and/or the fmu disk

How can your wide band be at 7.4:1. Most wide bands range from 10-20:1 with a voltage range from 1-5 volts. I don't think it would run at 7:1 at least at Idle it would not.

Is the FMU installed right? The 12:1 disk should be the most rich under boost. It should not change the fuel pressure until boost comes in.

Try and by pass the FMU and see what the A/F ratio is at idle. don't drive it like that.

Im just messing with you. I wouldnt up the boot until you are forsure that the air/fuel is right when you are in boost.

fmu is most likely the cause of your problems. Take it off or by pass it like stated above. Do not drive it like that though. Way too rich man. I tuned mine for a 12.1 afr. Some say that is too lean but I think it is fine. I had a fmu and I am not a fan of them. Good luck and I hope you get it all worked out.

so do you mean take the vac line off the fmu or completely run by it?

pull the fuel lines off the fmu, connect them together.... and start your car up and use your adj. FPR to drop the fuel to about 35lbs. 370cc is about 35lb/hr......

@ 35lbs of fuel pressure, your injectors will flow about 28lb/hr (290cc)

Your car should idle fine at that setting.

Now, hook up your FMU. Start the car. The fuel pressure should still be at 35lbs at idle. If not, then something is wrong, either its hooked up wrong, or its messed up (or you have an adj. screw on it, and you can turn it down)

Now, under boost.... you plan on running 7psi? With a 12:1 disk, thats 84lbs extra of fuel..... So take your base setting of 35(bs) + 84(ef) - 7(bp) = 112lbs of fuel.... That makes your 35lb/hr (370cc) injectors flow like 90lb/hr (945cc) injectors...... which at 75% duty cycle, should support 490hp.

No wonder your running rich. The "LEANING OUT" your seeing, is your stock fuel pump not being able to flow enough fuel at that pressure.

Granted.... I might have made a mistake in all my calculations....... but I think I got it right (it is 5:30am... and I havnt slept yet)

How much boost are you at right now, sounds like less than 6psi, with 370cc injectors, you are too rich. Stock injectors should be fine with 6-7psi and the FMU. Do you have aadjustment screw on your FMU?
