More &*@O#$ problems
Saturday, April 23, 2005 3:34 PM
Really need some help guys, I'm at the end of my rope...

So the car starts up and idles just fine. Runs mint for awhile while I baby it to warm up. Once it gets up in temperature a bit, it starts running terrible. It will be just fine until I reach the 2500-3000 rpm range, and it starts falling apart. Bogging, RPM drops to 900 or so, real jumpy basically. It pulls itself out of it eventually and runs fine for a bit. If you keep the engine over 3.5k it runs great.

Through this ordeal I've gotten pretty mad, so I hammered on the car. In this case it runs great through the whole RPM range right to redline, though all 5 gears.

Now I've had times where I drove it to work (50 miles) and nothing happened the entire time, but the next day it will do as described above.

Just to aid in any help, the FPR is brand new, brand new Walbro pump, fuel filter. Pulled the plugs, they are clean, slightly white; no black marks on the coil pack. Only visible problem is a cracked timing chain cover which leaks some oil.

Please help, throw out some suggestions. I'll answer any questions I can.

What do you mean by "falls apart"?

I'd be apt to check your coolant temp sensor... it seems to me when the car begins to warm up the pcm doesn't really know it and is bogging you with fuel...

That is my GUESS. A few people have had this problem before, I know Jake did.

How much boost are you pushing and do you have a check engine light on?

Chris, by 'falls apart' I mean the RPMs just drop to nothing, almost stalls out. Which was the reasoning behind the new FPR, thought that was the problem. Do you think the PCM would be dumping too much fuel (which definately could cause the bogging) only in that specific RPM range? I'll look into that though, thanks.

Team Tach, the boost is zero. In eight months, I've yet to hook up the wastegate actuator. So even when I jump on it, I barely see pressure (2 psi). The check engine light has been on but I just got the computer reflashed to a '99 (thanks Chris for the EGR/knock help), and the CEL was not on yesterday.

What are the symptoms of a bad TPS?

Matt-

The symptoms of a bad tps can be seen only through a graph of the tps signal. The signal will suddenly drop or rise without a movement of the gas pedal. Hopefully next week I'll be buying a scanner for the laptop I just picked up. I'd be happy to come out there and help get it all tuned up. Jake wants to meet up with ya too, we need to get this thing running man, its my old engine and I'd like to see it boost fed too

I don't think the pcm is dropping too much fuel, but what is your fmu set at? What do you have the FPR base pressure set to? 2 PSI if you have a 12:1 FMU and a 45 PSI base pressure means almost 70 PSI of fuel pressure, which is way too much gas. Does the manifold glow at all? Maybe have somebody follow behind you and see if they can see liquid coming out of the tailpipe when you get on it, or grey smoke and a gas smell.

I'll pick up an autotap hopefully this next paycheck, help anyway I can man.

so u have no check engine lights?

I am up for coming down when ron is available to give ya a hand/scratching my head at it for sure.

Ron, should have bought the scanner first, you could have borrowed my laptop. Regardless, I appreciate the help. As for you questions, I don't have an FMU. I have a MF2 that is all internally wired, but has no connection to the car yet (no tach signal, no power). As I said the wastegate is open, so boost should have nothing to do with it. I do tend to smoke at start up (which I'm 99% sure is oil due to high start up pressure), but none after that. Gas smell I also get. Hard to tell where that is from since I have a slight gas smell ever since we shaved the gas door. And no, no glowing manifold for me. Not even after a 50 minute drive to work.

Jake, thanks man. I'll be in touch. As far as the CEL, I had one (due to not having a EGR hooked up) but I rewired the knock and since the reflash, no CEL. Might come back though, I'll drive it a bit tonight.

Man I'm confused. Might have to take it to a mechanic for the first time.

Does it fall apart right when you first hit the gas?

Good question... answer.... I don't know I'm so far behind on my car that its unreal, if I can spare a day I definately will, but I don't know when. When are you done with classes Matt? Jake, I will be in SP this weekend, but busy for the most part, I can spare a couple minutes to swap pillars... email me about that or somethin.

Matt-

Might be a map sensor issue, do you have a vac gauge? I'd try putting a check valve on the map sensor vac signal and see what that does for ya.

John, not when I hit the gas, just randomly for the most part in terms of throttle. However, it always seems to happen right near 2,200 rpm (give or take 100). If I keep the pedal where it is, it usually pulls out fine with a slight shudder. But sometimes it is all I can do to get the car to stay running. Sometimes it will even stall while I'm driving.

Ron, yes I have a vac gauge. As with above, it happens at various pressures (all vacuum). I don't have classes, I'm done with school forever (at least until June when they send me back). Thought about the check valve on the map, but couldn't figure why it would help.

Any thoughts on the check valve?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate people throwing their ideas in. Anything helps.

Well the map sensor can't see more than like 1.05 atmosphere, mostly help at idle I guess, but other people have had luck with it, using a couple of them, so perhaps its a cheap thing to try.

Other than that I'm pretty stumped. Runs great when you are really on it, and below 3.5k, but over that it just falls on its face. Is it just over 3500 when you aren't on it at all? This really does sound like a sensor issue, just which one is a bit hard to nail down. Coolant temp sensor could be a good starting point.

Do you have a adjustable FPR? I was having a similar issue, and hadm a adjustable FPR on the Reaper. Yesterday the FPR took a dump and started shooting fuel out the vacum port. I had to put the stock one back on and all seems to be good now. I was starting to think it was a TPS problem on the Reaper.

John, no I have a OE FPR. Wonder if I got a shotty one? Might stop and pick up a TPS tonight after work and give it a try. If it doesn't work, I'll just return it. So a similar problem is fixed with your car, with just a FPR?

Correct, but I only got to drive it about 7-8miles after fixing it, so I will not know for sure until I drive ti some more.

The saga continues...

Picked up a new TPS on the way home from work. Swapped it in (which really sucked with the HO manifold), now the idle won't drop below 2k. I'll swap the original back in tomorrow.

Next step?

The TPS shouldn't affect the idle at all... I wonder if your IAC is alright, I'd try resetting the computer before giving up with the TPS, and let it idle (even at 2k) for about 10-12 minutes to let the IAC relearn itself.

whoooaaaaa tps does affect idle how many cars have you ever heard surging while idling tps my good man tps but it sounds like his might be something a little more complicated so im at a loss with out physically looking at the car

u said u had the 99 ecu program on your computer.

did u do the re wiring stuff for the new 99+ knock sensor?

i know u have to move one wire over on the connector too.

ron- i will give u a call this week sometime.

Jake, yes rewired the knock (two wire knock from a '99) to the ECU (thanks to SunFighterGT and thefireman for that) before the reflash. No CEL since.

I'll take it for a ride again tonight to see if there is any difference, although continuing to care is getting rough.

The surging/killing.... is that at idle? Vac leak maybe?
