Hi friends. I have a simple doubt.
Does the intake manifold gasket that goes between the head and SC is the same as the one used by the OEM composite or plastic intake manifold with the head? in case of yes what would be the differences? looks similar or different? are the part codes same or different?

there is no gasket just rubber rings and not the same as the intake manifold
The manifold on the s/c already has o-rings...that is the gasket.......You don't use the old gasket at all.....

I ask because I am planing on using a phenolic spacer with the SC. I am searching about it, so maybe would be the exploited racing one, maybe not. Anyway, do you think that I would need another o-ring sc/head gasket or the oem flat one?

Don't do it. The phenolic spacer that Exploited makes does not account for the PCV vent hole on the head. If you went this route, you'd have a hole on the head that would expose oil vapor to the atmosphere, which effectively drains your oil over time.
When I had mine open on my 96 Z-24, I think it drained nearly a quart of oil after a couple thousand kilometers.

^ never thought of that. I have one of them spacers but didnt put it on, probably wont due to the amount of monkeing around with the brackets.

lol.... the "PCV Vent" as you called it, is nothing more then a Vaccume passage from the intake manifold, to the Air/Oil seperator on the block...... It puts the air/oil seperator under vaccume, to assist in pulling the crank case vapers into it. As quite a few of you put "mini air filters" on the crank case vent (found on the timing chain housing) anyway, the air/oil seperator is usually bypassed anyway. If you where that worried about it, a small hole could be drilled in the spacer, to allow vaccume to make its way to the air/oil seperator, or you can tap the hole, and put in a small pipe plug (this is what I chose to do on my engine).
I am sure that there where "other" reasons you drained "nearly a quart of oil after a couple thousand kilometers".......... its a 96, maybe it burned some oil, or leaked out from leaky gaskets/seals....... and even GM says up to 1 quart of oil consumption is "normal" between oil changes.

oh yea..... to seal the spacer to the head........ you can make a cork gasket...... or use a thin layer of RTV (I believe the Hondata spacers use no gasket....... but I could be wrong) in either case, the stock intake gasket isnt going to work.

Friends, I check some pics of the SC installation ( head without the OEM composite intake manifold and the SC itself) and can't find the hole you mention. Where should be this hole?
Talking about the Hondata heatshield I read some good comments about it. Seems that is a nice improvement, something like 20% colder intake temps.
According to some info that found in the net the Hondata heatshield is 0.106" thick and supposely can be installed without any mod, issue or need larger bolts/brackets. Also doesn't need any type of gasket.
The thickness is important because can reject more heat but can produce clearance and other issues. I heard that the SC clearance with the radiator support is something like 1", please check me if I am wrong. Inclusive I read some info about 3.8L SC engines using 3/8" phenolic spacers that have some hood clearance and belt/tensioner problems.
So friends, do you know what material are they using for the Hondata heatshield gasket?
I found some good materials (phenolic sheets) that can be used for this and starts as low as 0.06" and up to something like 2". Also are not expensive at all.

theres less then an inch clearance onfor the radiator support when the engine revs so no use putting on a spacer as you dont have the room to do it anyways unless you some how bend the support
Friends finally I got some good info.
Phenolics spacers are normally done with Garolite G-10/FR4 sheets.
Hondata heatshield is made of Teflon PTFE S100 virgin sheets and is 0.106" thick. This a common material used for industrial gaskets. That is the reason that it doesn't need any other gasket at all to seal the parts in contact and withstand temps up 500ºF. The comments are really good about it.
Friends last question, for people that have the SC. What gasket thickness (garolite or Teflon) do you think that can be used with the SC without mods or at least some new brackets but the oem belt? or the belt tensioner can accept, using the stock belt , gaskets like the 3/8" one?
