I was having a conversation at lunch and we were wondering if anyone's had any trouble ordering a supercharger kit through a dealer.
They're not making them anymore, right? So all that's left is whatever inventory is still out there, right?
I'm just wondering if the supply is starting to dwindle or if I've still got plenty of time to save up and get my hands on one. Does anyone know if they're still readily available to the dealer networks or has anyone like Pace Parts snapped up all the remaining inventory or anything?
the company (magnusson) that was making the kits stopped producing them. after the initial first run of 2500 units and only a few hundred sales they decided to scratch the project. apparently they are just throwing away the casting pieces now meaning no more pieces.
just some inside info i got. so yes it will probably get harder to find soon
I used to race cars, now I race myself.

i dont doubt it.. GM dropped the ball hardcore on the s/c kits...
no/minimal info for the public via ads or dealers + only supporting 3 of the 7 years of 2.4 = flop like it did. i bet if they would have bothered to tell people in some manner and support older cars then they would sold 20 times as many. $2000 for fully supported boost option is very good. if anything they would sell a bunch of reflashes..
Sven you totally quarterloafed your computer..
Well first off, the only reason they're $2000 is because they're dumping the stock, surely at a loss, so you can't use that as a factor. Remember that they intended to sell these kits around $5000 USD. They were $7678.50 CAD here when released.
You're right though... GM really did botch this whole project. The fact that it only worked with the last 3 year's models wasn't the kicker. The biggest problem in my eyes is that they released it after the end of production of those models. If they had released it back in 2000 or 2001, people would have been able to order the kits with the cars and include them in the financing. With all the low-interest financing that was tossed around, I think the kits would have sold like hotcakes.
By the time they released them in 2002 though, they were only good for used cars that people were already making payments on. Not quite as easy to afford at that point.
Anyhow... this is all besides the point. Does anyone know if the dealers can still get them? Has anyone had any trouble getting their hands on one?
GM is just a dumb ass when it comes to certain aspects... especially their small car performance stuff
they made the right move in doing the supercharger for the 2.4, but like you said its only offered for the last 3 years of Z, plus lack of advertising.
IMO, if GM was smart, they would have had a factory supercharged Z24 with it already installed when they were being sold.. that would have ruled
But GM constantly Fs up when it comes to sport compact division.
The ecotec engine was a smart move for the last years of the cavalier and the new cobalts, but to be honest, I'm kind of questioning whether or not the cobalt SS will be as good a performer as everyone's hoping... and I base this on the fact that GM has f'd up so many times before, something HAS to go bad with the cobalt too..
I hope for the best, but expect the worst
Right then... so are they running out of supercharger kits yet?

Doesn't look like it. Received my order yesterday. I ordered it Tuesday from Paceperformance.

Yeah, I'm just wondering if anyone has them besides Pace Parts or if they've scooped up the remaining inventory or anything.
Basically, I'm trying to gauge how much time I've got before I have to get one or forget it.
Weas I heard there was only a couple-few hundred left in the warehouse. IMHO yes now is the time to get one *if* you want one that bad.
wow only 2500 where made gee that makes me feel special or something lol

GM only actually produced 1000 kits for resale.
a year ago December, GM had only sold 38 kits.
They destroyed 750 of the remaining kits.
So total, there were only 250 available.
Although it seems to be selling better in the last year, I doubt there's currently 150 kits installed out there.
If there are more out there already, then I'd say they are running out of them.

Car is for Sale!Supercharger kit is for sale!
ya, i wasnt ever sure how many GM had made, now i know thanks..
I think they would lower the price again in the near future to sell out of the remaining ones .
well before my wife and i won the one that was on ebay i called the dealership next to me to see how much it would cost with my disount, since i am a mechanic at a honda dealership, and they told me they could still order them. my cost is like $2,475.
wow i have a rare car? This is great. Does that make my car more valuable? Like 1 of only 150. . . I always thought their would be more of them out their, just the people didnt come in here that often. Now it seems more like the only people who have it, are here.

ahhhhh crap..i gota get ordering my'n then.... so much for waiting till May to get it
Why in the hell would they destroy a bunch of kits? I mean, if they sold them for a grand each they'd sell every last one of them, no question. That's gotta be better than getting NOTHING for them!!
SImple answer is warranty.
If it was going to take them the next 7 years to sell them, the costs of keeping a warranty system active for them and the costs of having to actually fix 10 year old cars is insane.

Hey Kevin, I'd talk to Borgs...with all that he's doing with his car lately I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he took the S/C off and went another route.
And after reading this thread, I gotta change my sig to include "One of only 150 or so"
