Hey everyone, I was hoping to hear your comments on the idea I had. The constant delay on the 2200 turbo kit from HAHN had me think harder about the RSM supercharger. My Idea was to buy a junk 2200 from a junkyard, tear it apart and get core charge for the TB/Intake Manifold/Head. While those new parts are coming in, I would order some pistons/rods. other misc. things to build the engine. Once that is complete, I would just swap out engines and have the Charger installed. And maybe sometime in the near future I would put nitrous on the engine too.
So my Question is this, should I wait for the Turbo (If it comes out at all) or should i just go ahead with my idea. Either way the engine is going to be rebuilt, so keep that in mind. All opinions are welcome

Engine Swap, seriously
Not saying that to be an ass just stating a fact, you spend 3900 on being boosted to be as fast as a stock Z24, honestly your almost better off trading in your car and getting a Z24 putting an intake and exhaust on it and you would be running the same speed. I'm not bashing the 2.2 owners, I think it is the easiest J body engine to work on and things are very simple and it gets the best gas mileage. Its a great economy engine. But on the performance side of things making a 2.2 fast is a waste of time and money. The 2.2 already makes 30-40 HP less to begin with than a 2.4 or Eco, the money you will spend just trying to make it equal to one of those engines far outweighs the cost of just swapping the engine, boosting it only makes it equivalent to a 2.4 or eco with intake and exhaust. Just seems kinda stupid to me to spend 4000 to be as fast as a stock Z24 money can be used more effectively with a better engine. I mean really the GM supercharger for the 2.4 is 2k and you can find an engine for a few hundred bucks, that motor setup is proven by many to run low 14s which is far faster than you will get with a boosted 2.2 with less than 10psi. If your going to run 10psi or more you will have to rebuild the engine anyway and then spend even more $$$. but yea you can do it , but theres better options

Oh, and that's just a few of the people. I know there are quite a few more that I have forgotten
dude,
you might hate him for saying it, but it is the truth. the 2.4L at 10 psi will run a hell of alot faster than the 2200. But, ive had other racers tell me that the cavalier in general is a waste of time regardless of the engine (they are so dead wrong) but everyone has there opinions.... if you have the money then do it man.
Under Construction
I understand what Rodimus is saying, but also know that im not looking for 450 hp either. Of course if im going to buy another engine to build for boost, why not buy a "better" engine, right? The thought has come to mind, but ive seen some pretty quick 2200s on this site (thanks lowfire).
The reason why i came up with this idea was to get around 250 to the wheels (eventually with nitrous). Im around 85 now, add the RSM Charger + TB/Intake Manifold/Head/full exhaust and hopefully put me around 175. Add 50-75 for nitrous and i should be somewhere around my goal.
Im not sure, it was just a thought. I probably couldnt get everything together in time because Im not going to have any vacation days after march (Unless I have the Charger sent here for me to install myself) . I figured the hardest part of the project was to get the new engine itself. Maybe im streching my money/time too far.... more opinions welcome, thanks Rodimus & Lowfire

Eli, no I dont hate him, the way i always thought is that its a wast of time to mod ANY car. People cant seem to wonder why we spend so much money on our cars, and yet go home to their vast rock collection. They see it as a waste, we see it as a hobby, and vise versa. I appreciate all opinions on this subject Eli, even yours

Lowfire, am I supposed to be impressed with that list or something? I see one timeslip out the whole bunch and the one that is there is for a car running 14.3 with about $8000 worth of work done, all you did was prove my point ya you can make 2.2s fast but for alot more $$$ I can guarentee you it wont take me even above a 1/4 that amount of money to do 13s

I think unless you want to have 300 hp to the ground there is no reason to swap out the motor! you;d be spending a @!#$ load of cash just swapping the engines, at least I would because I would havea shop do it . SO for some of us with out the know how to do the swap a built 2.2 is damn good, I'm guessing it could run 250 easily built!!

as far as core charge is concern, i hope you dont htink you'll get full core charge, you only get the full corecharge if you are buying the exact item, other than that your core charge will not yield you enough money for pistons. or rods for that mater.

That was the Plan Eddie. I was going to get the TB/Intake Manifold/Head from them, and use the core towards the Supercharger. The rods/pistons were going to be bought with my money. I thought they only gave store credit for core, so thats why i was going to buy the TB/IM/head from them.

wow, you have no idea what your talking about. give me 4 grand, and ill show you a 300hp ohv. with change
About engine swaps, you can say, for the same money, you can swap to a 2.4, then somebody is gonna say, for the same money, you can swap to a V6, then somebody else is gonna say, for the same money, you can swap to 350. To me, tuning isnt about getting the most power for my money, its about taking something that cant do @!#$, and turning it into something that can.
Good point Dan. Ive got a 2200 3spd auto, pretty much bottom of the barrel. I wasn't looking to break records with this car (at least not anymore). I was just wanting to know what people thought of the Supercharger compared to Hahn's turbo kit thats supposedly coming out sometime in Summer. Ive been saving every since I can remember. My first choice was Exploited (
) then i was excited about johnny macks kit...now thats gone too. So my choices are pretty much limited to RSM, CavCon, Custom or waiting for HAHN. I guess since now i have the money to get one im just getting a little impatient., especially since the sale on the supercharger is going to end soon. Keep the ideas/comments/opinions coming guys.

thank you dan i totally agree. i have a 2200 3 spd and i am planning on boosting my car and i am paying probably around $4000 to totally build my 3 spd auto, completely rebuild my motor internally and put a turbo on it. maybe another grand when i do the fuel mods. i cant wait till this spring
i too have to agree its all about the challenge to me if i wanted a full blown racecar i would get one but why do all that when you can show off what you did personally i remember an old saying "there is no replacement for displacement" and i know i look at all these mustangs and wonder to myself why? why be like everyone else personal acheivement is what makes these cars a blast to work on you can wrench all day and all night and when you take her down to the track and gain 2/10ths in the 1/4 you are so jubilant of course you always want more but bigger isnt always better i we have a local speed shop witha civic that just ran a 8.66 in the 1/4 on one of those little 1.8 liter engines sure they could have a v-8 in it but when you tell someone how crazy fast this thing is they're in disbelief because they have done the impossible wich is what it all boils down to dont imitate, innovate, do the impossibe and youll have a lot more memories in the long run from all the blood sweat and tears put into
your project
"dude, thats a girls car"
cool chris i just wanted to clarify cuz i thought you were just going to send cores in thinking youd get the full core charge. but thats cool. yeahif i had the money i'd definatly get there cylinder head. but right now i'm focusing on rebuilding the trans second flywheel gets off back order

I just dont know if this idea is going to work, I can get the TB/IM/Head no problem, but id have to have the charger installed rather quickly, becuase Im not going to have any vacation days to take so that i can get it installed. (the sale price still includes install and hotel right?) Plus Id either have to rebuild the engine with those parts +internals quickly, or have the Charger installed and have the internals done later. Im not really sure what to do anymore. Keep bringing the ideas guys.

talk to them they can work out a deal with you , look at their pulleys while your at it. oh and definatly invest in a msd and new fuel pump. thats a must. to maximize power. not sure if it comes with a pump if so get the msd.

Gonna try to call RSM and HAHN today to see whats going on. Thanks for all the help guys, if you got something to tell me please do
CarDomain
Well, now Im gonna get the TB/IM/Head from them, and use the core charge for MSD programmable with coils. Gonna make sure i have a fully built motor for whatever boost i choose. Anyone have reviews of the JBP short-block?? i don't think im gonna be able to get in on the sale of the charger tho. Guess ill see what happens down the road. thanks for the help guys

then buy your standards modding any car for any reason is a waste !!!!!!!!!!????????
might as well buy a ferrari or lambo or saleen , and save the time and hassle

Are you serious? You honestly think that a Eco or 2.4 running intake and exhaust will put out more power than a stock internal 2.2 turbo? Either you are blind or you need to start reading these boards more often

A 2.4 with the GM S/C with exhaust will dyno between 175-185hp, right? So you will be spending over $2,000 for the GM S/C, around $500 for a 2.4 longblock, around $400 for a 2.4 transimission, another $65-100 for the engine harness & ecu to put out 175-185hp?
LOL, there are stock internal turbo 2.2s that have put down over 200hp. Stock internal turbo 2.2s putting out more than a 2.4 running the GM blower
Rodimus Prime wrote:If your going to run 10psi or more you will have to rebuild the engine anyway and then spend even more $$$.
Like I said earlier, there have been guys with stock 2.2s running over 10psi and putting out over 200hp.
Alex Halvachs put down over 200hp in stock turbo 2.2 running 10psi.
Dan Cotter put down over 230hp with his stock turbo 2.2 with around 13psi.

You could buy like 20 cavs for the price of some F-O-B exotic...your forgetting Rodimus' point...that MONEY COULD BE SAVED, that was what he was trying to say...so your arguement is pretty much void
A mod is a mod in my books, whether you swap to a better engine or improve your stock engine, you are still in fact modifying(key word) your ride...

Yes you are correct, you can save money and have more power with a turbo 2.2 than a 2.4 with the GM S/C.
