An Ode to my EGR woes :(
Monday, December 20, 2004 5:02 PM
My my wonderful 97Z is cursed with EGR

I have installed the ZZP egr sim....
Good news no CEL light......
Bad news.....bad hesitation and my car generally hesitates like poo. Much like Jakes hesitation I would imagine?
NEXT
I am going to swap in a 1999 PCM ECU.
My first question is I believe 1999 had some 2.4's with EGR. How do I know what PCM to purchase, perhaps a part # or something I can reference?

Second question: I have an auto so the PCM will have to be from an auto. How many different variations of PCM's are there? How specific must I be when selecting one?
Do I just match the power train features, transmission, engine ect. ?

(Perhaps I am now paying for past wrongs in my life?)

Thanks
Justin

PS. In retrospect all those past wrongs were pretty fun!!!!! ~
Thanks for the help!!!!

ya that sounds like how my car was. Sucks. EGR is the devil.

I just clear the code when i start up the car, annoying, but it runs like stock now so that is a great trade off. Plus with the CEL on, it turns on the cooling fans= cools the s/c.

My advice to u, is talk to eric- jdm4drlscav, i forget his username, the gold 4dr one. Anyways, he can get u set up on the 99 ecu swap.

It really isnt that tough. this is what i know. Get a 99 ecu, or have it reflashed to 99 specs( fine a 99 2.4l and get the vin #, it pays to know people at dealerships. CRASH, has a automatic 2.4l, take his vin #). ecu can be had from junkyard websites, i snagged one years back for 26$ shipped, but sold it to hanzenrider as i have a 96.

u have to move one pin on the wiring harness, and then add one pin/wire to the new 99-02 knock sensor and that is about it.(something like 35 - 37, i forget, 30 something) and something about the theft lock- leaving the car turned to the ON position till the light stops blinking.

also, u need to have the PIN out of your computer/99 one. and some little pin/wire end little metal things u have to pick up at a dealership.

Hanzenrider might be able to help u with the computer stuff, i sorta helped on his car, and nick- changeforabutton.

Thanks Jake I appreciate the input. It hit OrangeZ with an Email.

I still have the physical EGR parts connected to my vehicle as the SC wont go on till March sometime. Wonder how the EGR valve works. Is it computer controlled or controlled be exhaust gas temp?

egr is stupid.
It is just there when u start up the car, the computer see's if it works. Probably something like letting warm air into your intake manifold so the car warms up faster.

I have drove 150 miles non stop and the EGR light doesnt come on, i just have the plug dangling there. Then i shut off the car and start it up again, 30 seconds later the CEL comes on, i clear it and i am on my way.
Taken from my instructions 2 summers ago:

Ok, it took about an hour, and only cuz I'm a wiring harness dolt.

Steps Taken:

Jacked up the car
Took off the passenger Tire (completely unnecessary
Got under the car and found the 2 wiring harnesses behind the turnsignals.
Unscrewed the harness closest to the outside of the car
This harness is the BLUE harness. (The right one)
Took off the plastic cover to the harness
Inserted a toothpick to break the rubber seal for the pin on the harness
Inserted my 2 wires (one blue and one grey) using proper harness connectors. They go into Pin 32 (grey) and Pin 34 (blue)
Put the plastic cover back on the harness and bolted it back under the car.
Ran the wires into some new wire loom and ran it up to the block beside the tranny.

here is where things got shiatty. The Knock sensor was missing half of its connector, so I just cut it off the connector... the problem is one wire is greyish white and one is red. I assumed red meant blue on the PCM and Grey meant grey.

I soldered those connections together, taped them, and ran the loom over them...
Then I took a long ass socket and bolted the knock sensor into the free bolt above the tranny and under the powersteering pump on the block.

Done and done. I started the car and it runs fine so I didn't fugg anything up I don't think....

The benifit to this is that now I have a '98 and '99 knock sensor on my car, so when I switch my PCM from the '98 to the '99, the change should be seamless as the only change to the harness that was made was no EGR and a 2 wire knock sensor.

I will be able to unplug my EGR once the PCM Reflash is done and hide that harness, and I'll be EGR free and have the better PCM.

So - yeah that's the wiring. Go find a dealer that'll reflash it for you and find a vin # for a 1999 AUTO.

Good luck.

gee thanks ekaj , i love you to man !!!

LOL

but all you need is a friend at the dealer and a VIN # from a 99 non-egr auto trans cav , to reprogram your 97 pcm

all the 99 cavs ive seen all were non-egr , i do know there are some 99 with egr out there , but very few

ive got the pin #s and part #s for the knock sensor and the connector end at home

i wish i knew what happened to the VIN # i had in my PCM , i had it written down , but it got lost

The PCM commands the EGR to set an appropriate pintle position based on TPS and MAP. The PCM monitors the reaction of its commands through a feedback signal from the EGR. So the PCM checks the EGR for changes when the PCM commands a new EGR pintle position. If for any reason the PCM can't confirm information from the EGR, check engine light.
My egr used to open whenever it felt like it (especially when the car was cold and at low rpm) causing major hesitations and often times it would nearly stall. I battled that bitch for about 3 months trying different things like an egr blockoff plate with no hole and then with a variety of hole size revisions and even a custom board to fool the computer that everything was ok when I disconnected the egr. I read thru the wiring diagrams for the car and the "theoretical operation" of the motor/ecm to find what the conditions were when the egr valve was supposed to be allowed to open.

I learned a lot, but all in all it was miserable. I decided to hook it all back up normal with no blockoff/restriction plates and replace the coolant temperature sensor thinking that maybe, just maybe, the ecm thought the car was warm when it actually wasn't and was allowing the egr to open at incorrect times. Well, the problem went away, just like that. I was half pissed off that I went thru all the other stuff but half tickled pink because the problem was gone.

Your problem may or may not be the same thing, but I just figured I'd share my story.
Goodluck!

Nice.....I did not know I could re-flash the 97 PCM with the 99 data!

Anyone out there have a 99 Auto 2.4 they can provide me with a vin # for the re-flash?
I did disconnect the ZZP egr sim and the lag is gone Sucks that did not do the trick!!!

Thanks for the help everyone...with a little praying to the car god I should be in business for my supercharger by March!!!!

hey justin i got your email

i got a egr sim and it works great on my engine

some people have been known to have problems i beleave jake did

the best way to go about it is a 99ecu swap but the easiest way is the sim

Cool......BTW Ebay motors is the shizzy.

They list vin #'s for cars. forgot about that route I will just have to take a chance it's a 1999 with no EGR!

i emailed a reply to you

only thing i couldnt find was which of the wires went to which 1 on the 99 knock sensor

so if anyone has the engine diagram for the 99 2.4 it would be helpfull

i know what pins the grey and blue go into at the pcm , just not what the colors go to on the knock sensor

I saw the post and I appreciate the instructions. (I know you were not taking to me ) So you drove around with the new 2 wire knock sensor plugged into the PCM with no ill effect with the original programing.
Have you since had your PCM re-flashed to the 99 specs?

^^^^...... Yes I have. It was flashed two days later.

To this day I'm still driving around with both knock sensors wired in. No problems.

And no codes. Ahhh - how sweet THAT is.

I was not aware you also had the origional knock sensor still operating. Well it looks like I'm on the path to a reflash and wiring project in the near future.

Question: Does the origional knock sensor wire up to a different location other than the blue harness? I dont want that to be a problem!

i did read your instructions , but if you read what i left in the quote , you werent sure which wire went were

and i would have looked at my harness for the wires , but they are all in the loom with the stock wires

also i gave him the part # for the connector for the knock sensor , so you do not have to cut the plug off

Well it's nice to know that the PCM will not react adversely to the fact that their a two knock sensors installed with the original 97 programming or the 99 programming.
Is their a downside to having two knock sensors?
Is the new 1999+ knock sensor a different design...possibly more sensitive?
Where is the knock sensor located? I looked in my Chiltons and know what to look for...just don't know where to look?

Thanks

knock sensor is located out back under the exhuast manifold, on the drivers side sorta. u would just leave that one in place/ un hook it., and put the new one up near the oil filter, there are some open spots there that will work.

Super sweet...thanks Mang.

If I dont have the reflash done right away but change out the Knock sensor to a 2 wire, Wont I throw codes as the 97 programming wont recognize the new 2 wire set up?

Re: An Ode to my EGR woes :(

No because you're putting the new two wire knock sensor into pins in the PCM that are currently not used at all by your PCM.

When you reflash to the 1999 ECU it'll stop using the pin for your 1 wire knock sensor and start using the pins for the two wire knock sensor.

It's a thing of beauty, and something I figured out two years ago.

Totally makes sense.....Thanks everyone!!!!!
I will have to start working on it once the temp. gets above 0 hopefully some time in the near future. What ever it takes to remove the EGR is what I will do to get the SC installed with the proper clearances.

PS. If you happen to cross paths with the person who created EGR though probably old punch him in the face for me!!!!!

Thanks

Back from the dead...

'99 Knock Sensor - grab from AutoZone?
Reflash - will any dealer do this? I don't have an 'in' at the dealership otherwise.
