Colder Thermostat

Is it possible and if so who makes a colder thermostat for the quad four. I have seen alot of people with having a problem with running to hot. <br>

if there is an autozone near you then look there. i got my 180 t-stat from there, and i think they also had a 160.

i dont see how the thermostat opening sooner will help keep the engine cooler at the top. it just means that the coolant will start to run through the radiator sooner, but the engine will still eventually heat up to whatever it till reach as its top temp. What you really want to look for is a high flow thermostat which will allow the coolant to flow faster, meaning more will be reaching the radiator and faster... less obstruction... alot like an exaust... get a straight through muffler to speed up exhaust gas exit. Removing the thermostat means itll take longer for your engine to reach operating temp. Winter time doubly so.

is it bad to run without the thermostat? I would think that it wouldnt reach good operating temp. but maybe for the summer months? I could only find a 180 degree one at autozone. and they said thats what was in there stock. but my engine runs just a little over 200. and I dont like that at all. cause after it hits 180 it feels like a huge power loss and right around 160 degrees the engine feels like it has the most power.

its a 180 stock. It opens at 180, and right at 200 is where mine z's have both run.

so is anyone running colder than stock? i have been giving this thought as well because the colder t-stat further prevents detonation, therefor maybe you could run more agressive timing... just a thought thanks guys <br>

Yes, that is correct, and please people, DO NOT TAKE OUT YOUR THERMOSTAT.

If you want to keep your car cooler, you need a better cooling system. Aka, a bigger radiator. <br>

maybe this will help.....

a thermostat remains closed until the designed temperature of the thermostat is reached, then it will open. this will aid in stopping the rising temperature, and in the old days it would steady the rising temp. on today's newer cars, however, a fully open thermostat is not enough. the coolant temperature sensor also must activate the electric fan, thus increasing the cooling capacity of the radiator under a full-flow condition caused by the opening of the thermostat. therefore, a change in thermostat alone, and the lower opening temperature of this valve, may not be enough to change the operating temperature of the engine, especialy under heavy traffic conditions (no air flowing over the radiator). thus to change the temperature in all conditions, a coolant temperature sensor with an activation temperature at your intended range is sometimes necessary.

engines do not just heat up until they get to their range, irrespective of thermostats or electric fans. engines will heat up until they destroy themselves, so therefore the temperature must be controlled by a closed-loop system. a good measure is to have enough cooling at a state of thermostat open and electric fan off, but new emissions, aerodynamic fascias, etc., have changed this thermodynamic balance in favor of periodic electric fan operation, cycling an engine's temperature from switch on temp (210) to switch off temp(180).

coolant temp sensors with different switching settings are hard to find... my pt cruiser with a 180 deg thermostat works fine on the road or on cool days in stop-and-go, but combining a hot day with stop and go, and the engine will simply keep heating up until the factory-set collant temp sensor switches on the fan, increasing the radiator's ability to remove heat with the use of forced convective heat transfer.

the switch-on temp of the thermostat allows the engine to warm up to a reasonable operating temperature, and then the thermostat valve allows coolant flow. removing the thermostat places the engine in a situation where it is cooling itself down before it has even had a chance to warm up.

i think you got it and hopefully they all understand now... thermostat OPENS at that temp... doesnt keep you at that temp.

hypertech sells a chip and includes a 160 thermostat, I had it in my 93 grand am with 2.3 ho so I imagine they sell one for the cavi. I took the chip and the stat out though because I live in michigan and froze my butt off in the winter, if you live were it gets cold I wouldnt change it.

They dont. Yes the newer Cavaliers have 195's. Actually if you are running boost, you want the head temp cooler. I just switched my fluid out to propylen glycol and water wetter. The water wetter is supposed to drop the head temp. I have noticed a better responce out of mine since I have done that. And the alky I am running is responding better also.

i have added the hyper lube coolant cooler and i noticed my z went from 195 to aroun 180-185 on average and as far as the good of a lower therm if your system can cool fluid to 160 it will shut the stat at 180 not allowing the cooling system to work at full potential since the engine will lock out the coolant before it gets there. so in order to lower the engine temp you do need a cooler stat but also a larger radiator, lower temp fan, in addition to stat. If you lower the temp to much you will need change the comp so as it won't try and run like it's in start up mode trying to warm up the engine. <br>

the computer comes out of "start up mode" as you call it before 160. you could put a 160 stat in and would help the car to run cooler.

Yes as stated before it could still reach 200, or even higher if sitting still, or in traffice, but ti would take longer for it to do that.

I have a turbo Z as well, and a all motor Z. The turbo Z gets hotter much faster than the alll motor Z. I plan to put a 160 stat in to bring that down, or should I say off set some of that extra heat that the turbo puts in there.
