installed turbo want to install oil cooler. when everything is installed should i put in alil more oil when i change the oil?

Never ran an oil cooler...I run the oem specs on my 300whp setup. I've actually never read on here about someone running an oil cooler. But doesn't mean someone hasn't...

no point in running the oil cooler at all especially if connecting it to the return line off the turbo, just asking to pressurize and blow seals out of your turbo

Im thinking over winter ill be installing an oil cooler on mine....

First off, yes, you will put in a little more to account for the oil that will be filling the lines as well as the cooler.

I get lucky with the ecotec only because im going to be using a billet piece that replaces the oil fill cap with fittings on it. So it will be getting great pressure through the cooler. running a -10 line to the filter, from the filter to the cooler, cooler back to the billet piece.

im on the fence for a oil cooler..... the extra amount of oil capicity is nice but i dont think its realy needed

Oil has an operating temp...

too high & too low will screw things up.

Which is why oil coolers should always have a temperature controlled bypass. You'll need to add more oil in based on how much oil is taken up by your cooler and the lines.

Why do you want it for more oil capacity, all of my friends are confused why I need more than 4 quarts to fill up my 4 banger, we have a ton of capacity for a 4 banger. Having it for cooler oil is a good reason though, I mean the lsj comes with one stock.

i was seeing temps of 230* before i added a cooler. Now it hangs right around 160-180*.

i run a oil and trans cooler.
but since my trans went, it will be dual oil coolers with the manual swap.
mine are behind my radiator.

I've run an oil cooler since day 1 with a thermostat bypass for the fall and cooler weather....

It only opens when it needs it. For $200 it was cheap insurance considering how hot the turbo is with oil running through it.

I have a water cooled turbo, but the temps are still crazy high if you want your oil to perform as desired.
Ideal oil temp is around 150*, most turbo applications see over 200*.
Just think about how much quicker your oil is breaking down.

Oil life is critical in a turbo application. With a boosted engine you lower the oil life drastically. Hence why you "SHOULD" (and I know not everyone does...including me) change your oil more often compared to a naturally aspirated engine.

water cooled jacket/let it cool down before shutting down and change oil every 3000kms seems to be working great

3000 kms?! I would think 3k mi would be fine on synthetic. But you really need to send your oil out to get tested to figure out when it should be changed since mileage is just a guess and it all depends on contamination and degradation. Once I build an engine I actually care about I'll get it tune and broken in with conservative oil changes and then keep sending my oil out until I can build a baseline of an average mileage that the oil should be changed at based on normal usage.

keep in mind, im hardly home as well so the 3000 kms is because it sits for so long/driven when home and for a 5L of oil/filter is really piss all cost wise

i dont run a oil cooler but to fight the temperatures i run diesel oil or durablend in my car. diesel oil has alot more additives and isnt as susceptible to breakdown as regular oil. i run 10-30 to 10-40 depending on outside temperatures and have never had a problem


running rich? turn the boost up
