History: Bought a turbo off Ben Davenport and was told it had ~200 miles on it, Pj had it idling with no issues, he/we shut it off to address a feed leak, fired it up and smoked badly. We assumed at that point it was just burning off the oil that dripped down, but every time we shut it off, and turn it on it burns oil badly for say less then 5 seconds, and then completely stops while driving. Turbo is a precision 6262 has a -10 an drain into the girdle and a -4 an feed. I received it without a restrictor but am second guessing not buying one. Feed is gotten from the port in the head. Thanks guys, I am pretty sure I know the answer but second/third opinions are always a safeguard.

a buddy of mine had this with a saab turbo it was new never used bought it from a guy on ebay he ended up have to rebuild it and something had to get machined i think
JBO since July 30, 2001
Journal Bearing. I've never ran a JB turbo without a restrictor, so I am tempted to use the one I have here.

Do you think it is "possible" for turbo seals t dry rot, as in if the turbo has sat for an extended period of time?

is this skunks old turbo?
No, dj mike bar got that. I got Ben Davenports

I doubt the seals would go bad from from sittings, but possible from running dry without enough oil. Plus since its precision I wouldnt be as worried about bearings/seals as much as some ebay turbo unless its been rebuilt before with different parts. But then again Ive rebuilt atleast 5 jb turbos using ebay kits and never had any issues

OH bens?
you mean the one that had the coolant mix with the oil on more than one occasion?
I dont know much... I do however know that on more than 1 occasion, ben's darton sleeved block leaked coolant into the oil.
the issue is getting worse. This turbo may be on it's way out, which is just another, aside from many, shots to the nuts from Ben.

A rebuild is not a big deal.
Buy yourself a rebuild kit and do it yourself, it only takes a couple hours if everything isn't rusted up. The kits run about 100-150 dollars.
id rather have it done professionally, by precision to make sure its right the first time

ewwwww.... sorry to hear that dude... ben is a good guy.... ive meet him in person.... never bought from him tho...... sucks to hear it..... get it rebuilt and go on..... heck if you have any diesel performance places around you they can rebuild them.....
I have bought multiple things from Ben. He is a good guy. Perhaps this isn't the turbo that was on the car during that whole thing. I was just throwing it out there...
there was a lot of let's say "info" left out, a lot of things I should have known before he sold the kit, IE no heat, IE we had to rig a lot of things to get the kit to fit (same engine/car) would have been useful to know before hand. It just sucks that I was without a car for 5 months, and now I have had it 1 month and now it will sit for quite some time again because I need to rebuild a supposed low mileage turbo

I bought his intake mani and his "skunks" darton block.
Well we know skunks motor worked, plenty of videos of that, how's that intake manifold?

a used turbo is a used turbo, whether it has 1 mile on it, or 1500 miles on it. Bearings can get @!#$ up from the very first turn of the key if its not primed. Buy a used turbo, take chances... learn background on where its coming from....
I knew exactly where it was coming from, and according to several people here, he was reputable.

maybe it was fine when he had it. again, used turbo, used bearings, bearings wear and fail, just like every other bearing. im on turbo #3, first 2 new, this one used. but i know the background. parts fail, it happens.
The intake is awesome. It added at least 30hp to the shelf in my garage.
In other words, I haven't installed it yet.
if thats the case you're pointing fingers at pj, not me. He primed it and it idled fine for 15 minutes, once it got heat cycled, we shut it off, started it up and bam, it was smoking, and it's been gradually getting worse.
