2.4 Supercharger
Thursday, December 30, 2010 8:40 PM
I've recently been entertaining the idea of doing a little more serious work on my 96. I found this for sale locally. How good of a deal is this? Is there anything in particular I need to look out for?

Quote:

GM performance parts supercharger
Fits on a Chevy 2.4 liter
Used for one week and then the car was sold
The part # for it is 88960576, retails for $2800.00 new, asking $1500.00

It seems legit. I've asked a few questions to try and figure out exactly what all is included. Also, after looking at the parts list in Bobby's FAQ, it looks like the part number he listed is for the 'installation instructions'.. Here are the pics he posted.

Thanks!

Wow that looks to be one of the orginal kits because it is black. They are usually grey/silver. Only ones I have seen black like that have been prototypes. Interesting.

Thanks guys, I thought it seemed a little high. I have no idea where he got $2800 from. If I ever hear back from him, I'll definitely have to get that price down..

He might be thinking he can find a sucker, because the eco kits go for more new

I do believe when the 2.4 kit first come out it was around that price, but they dropped as the sales were not what they thought they would be. Also some dealers charged more than others.

^He's right.
Back in 2004 when I bought my S/C I got it for $1900 shipped, when the price was $2500+ in those times.
One way in finding out if that is a prototype, is if the upper triangle support bracket has circles in its structual design. I know "97cavie24ls(™)" has or had a prototype S/C, he'll be your best resource on that type of S/C.

We need to see the underside of the charger to see if it is a prototype unit. But 97cavie24ls(™) or AZSpitFire97+01 (Todd) would be your best source of information on that.

AZSpitFire97+01 has the 2.4 prototype kit on his car now. ive seen it in person many times, the one pictures is definitely not a proto charger.

i bought mine with less than 1000 miles on it for 700 with everything except the cruise control bracket.

if you cant get it for less than 1000 i wouldnt bother.

So other than being black and being able to say you have a prototype kit what is the difference?

todd's 'm45' is actually a two piece and utilizes some kind of heat exchanger. this one is just a regular unit.

prolly black because maybe gm did that for the first run on them or something?

from what i remember you can still buy a brand new kit through pace performance for around $1500. why buy a used one that may not have absolutely everything for $1500 when you can get a brand new, SEALED unit for the same exact price?

ahh so where the production was just one giant piece that bolted up the prototype was like the m62 blower and manifold 2 separate pieces?

Yep, he's correct on the two pieces as if it had a provision for an intercooler. Now if memory serves me right, the reason they went sealed one piece was the lack of space. Back in the 90s GM was testing the M60s series charger for the LD9, but later GM decided to sell the M45. My guess GM did want the soon to be retired LD9 to look to good with the M60s series S/C as the L61 was in the horizon to be unleashed. Hell... in 1997/98 GM had a 2.0L Eco S/C that had a valve cover of the L61 running around. lol (?)

It seems to have everything with it. Here's a picture he sent me of the underside. After looking at this pic though, it look like there's some roughness or broken up coating or something inside the manifold. What is this?

Well I searched and found a part number for the seal kit. 88960489 I'm guessing this just includes just the 4 o-rings.

That part number if you listed 88960489 "manifold gasket" is actually for only 1 o ring. I know this because last summer I bought two of them from the local stealer ship for about $60. Sucks having to pay so much for just one gasket.

Dang.. Is it just a round o-ring or is it shaped? I might be able to get one from work.

no sir you do not need to buy the ones from the dealer... you can just bring one to a local place that sells o rings and have them match them up. i went to a local place when i had my m45 and i spent 10 bucks total,,,,, that is your best bet. hope that helps you out
