First Firing of the New Engine
Monday, April 05, 2010 10:54 AM
Well Guys...I'm just making a quick post to let everyone know I finally fired over the car today for the first time ! Of course, after two years of planning and building it's incredibly exciting moment.

I'm really digging the deep throaty sound of 3" exhaust all the way back - oil pressure was good, wide band reading a little rich, water temp came up o.k. and the fan kicked on eventually. So everything seemed to be working.

I had a little smoke while stuff burned off and probably will continue to until I get through the first drive. I have one oil fitting to address or tighten up.

I did notice just a little oil that came through or out of compressor side of the turbo housing (few drops). I'm running a restrictor so I'm wondering if this is normal for a new BB turbo, or is it something to be concerned about and watch closely??

Thanks to those who helped with advice (John Benham) and all who contribute to this site and body of knowledge. I could not have done all this without the inspiration from all who post - Thanks!

I'll try and clip some down time off the front end or take a new one tomorrow - first video was 9minutes of messing around to be sure the pump was still primed and waiting hp-tuners to boot.

Anyone think it will hurt to just throw in a second restrictor at the turbo? I don't think it should matter running two in series. I think the one I have is not quite adequate given the couple drops of oil on the compressor side I saw this morning during the first start.

Took the first drive this evening and put a 100 miles on the new engine. So freakin sweet! Can't wait to get the oil changed and start tuning and boosting it. Car ran really well staying out of boost with small A/F error %. The engine feels incredibly strong and it was hard to hold back on the throttle, but very nice to cruise in nonetheless :-)

I didn't get chance yet to e-mail hp-tuners for the BETA yet, but I think I have a decent config at the very moment. Logged about 4 different files and did tweaked the VE a little - I'll give it try after I get some sleep (which will be very difficult tonight

Thanks a lot Dave! It's such an accomplishment to me and I"m so happy to share it. Couldn't have done it without the org.

By the way - what weight oil are people using? I've just been doing some break-in with 5W-30 but i think with the added heat the viscosity is a little low. Are we using 20W-50 or straight 40 weight?

Nice!! I love seeing the LN2 builds. Excited to see what you do with it.

Your pictures in your registry are beautiful. That engine is CLEAN!!!! Nice work!!

5w30 is fine for break in like your doing. I used that as well, after break in I went to 15w 50 for a while. Now I am using Mobile1 10w40.

I use conventional 5w-30 for for break in, then switch over to synthetic. You dont want to run it with a thick/synthetic oil or the pison rings won't break in properly.

Thanks for the comments guys, I appreciate!

I'll keep using 5W-30 like I have been and maybe switch to 10W-40 later. Valvoline makes and actual Turbo or Turbo approved oil but I have not found it locally yet.

I prefer to use conventional at least until I get a couple 1000 miles on it. The synthetics are great for the heat, but they also are so slippery they can seep past gaskets and o-ring type seals more easily like the valve cover etc causing mess...

I'm going to tune with 5-6 psi boost initially after more break-in miles then try jumping it up to 13 psi since I have a pretty low compression ratio - eventually I need to hit the dyno this summer.

That's what I did with my SS.. At 500 did its first oil change, stuck with conventional.. then at 1000 I did the second and switched to synthetic.

What are you using for an oil pump just out of curiosity?

I swapped in an M98 oil pump after my block acquired 3 holes in it due to a seized up wrist pin.

I changed oil at the first 50 miles and will run till 400~500 and change again. In the stock previous engine with 189k miles I checked the stock oil pump clearances and it was just on the edge of tolerance for use - so using synthetic (mobil1) that long was fine on that pump. I was pretty hard on that stock motor late in it's life but it still ran like a top.

On the new engine build I went with a new stock oil pump. Sorry bout the seized wrist pin - could have been oil problem but seems more like a tolerance issue or maybe the rings were going and there was a lot of heat getting to pin.
