ld9 boosted pcv system

alright the other thread is full of alot of ecotec love wanna just see what everyone with the ld9s have been doing to fix the problems.....i have a catch can already and i am tring to see what the proper routing is for which line the catch can should be on and where you guys have the pcv under the third runner from the head ran for vacum if you guys have used check valves in the process. what you guys with ho manifolds are doing? this diagram was in the other thread.....

now on the m45 s/c kit the head pcv went into the bottom of the manifold on the s/c.. when i had that kit i seemed to burn up oil every 1,000 miles so i am trying to see what has worked for us ld9 guys.

Hole in head blocked off, PCV baffle hose vented to atmosphere.

Hmmmm, been wondering where the oil was going. Thanks, I think.

I have a M45 and I have a catch can hooked up on the line coming off the oil air seperator. Then connected to the intake.

why block off the head port?? that to me seems wrong...

It's not essential to apply vacuum to the PCV baffle. Nor is it to suck in all the oil vapor from said baffle into your turbo and charge pipes. Works for me.

lats clarify some things the thing that vents to intake and timing chain tower is called the air oil seperator, and are you running a catch can?

No @!#$, it's a baffle for the PCV system, which is also known as an air/oil separator. No, I don't have a catch can, I just said it's vented to atmosphere, but the stock system is basically a drain-back catch can... I don't understand why everyone is making it so complicated, the stock system is extremely simple.

I have the same system as Ion. The port on the head blocked (by the intake mani), and the pcv hose is vented to atmosphere. Im not running a catch can. Drove the car a lot last year and raced a few times and lost no oil. I also dont like the idea of having the air from the pcv system go through the turbo...

If you guys have it setup that way and it works then props to ya, as long as you have a way to block boost from getting in the crankcase your good. But if you compare a stock j-body pcv system to one on a factory boosted car they are much different. Also look at higher hp builds on like hondas and dsm's and what not, they are much more involved than just blocking off a port.

So to icemike's post and the OP - the stock PCV system is just not ideal nor adequate for happy amounts of boost.

I don't have a Ld9 but for those not wishing to put the oil back into the intake a "breather type catch can" may work for you. I put a link below:
http://www.jegs.com/i/JAZ+Products/547/605-125-01/10002/-1

For those that understand the advantage of having negative pressure on the crank-case when off-boost use below:
Megan racing catch can - or larger air/oil separator - the larger the can the greater the possibility of expansion, cooling, and separation of oil.

For those wishing to have the best of both worlds above:
good luck - maybe a secondary vacuum pump or more elaborate or sizeable system to really ensure you're not getting oil in the intake.

In all cases, using some sort of check valve (to block boost) between the crankcase/oil separator and the intake or whatever your vacuum source may be - but it needs to flow
freely, otherwise its function will be impeded. One possible thought is a large ball type check valve with no spring installed - like a manual ball-type boost controller would work.

I might suggest another breather style catch can on your orange "breather" above...Unless everyone says they don't get a drop of oil out of it because the stock air/oil separator is adequate.

Soo am I the only one who has the a/o separator completely bypassed? I have a hose off the timing housing straight to a vented catch can with lots of baffling, the ports on the a/o separator are capped off which Mark(OEM) was gona make a bypass plate a while ago..have to contact him. I tapped a fitting in my old ho mani flange and sloped it through my phenolic adapter to the pcv head port and had a check valve inline to a manifold vacuum, but was having problems with my catch can not filling so ditched it; think I just had a problem how it was setup.

But with the timing housing straight to a catch can and the head port blocked off, my intake ports stay nice and clean even on my stock higher mileage motor.

i could have a block off plate made for you ice. or i could sell you the wir oil seperator i got from oem

icemike - I don't think you want to use the block-off plate. What was your check valve like? It needs to behave like a true PCV valve or ball-style check vavle with 0 (zero) spring load as mentioned above otherwise the vacuum will never open it.

I'm running Identically the same setup as you are and it works just fine for me....

same system as these two dolts.

i am just confused as to why the m45 kit would have the head port vented to a vacum, and the stock engines if you guys say it is better with out this system

I'm trying to figure this out too. I'm leaning toward the setup Josh and icemike are running. To me it seems this would vent positive pressure and be better at keeping the oil in the engine. Let's keep this discussion going....
