Hey whats up guys,
I was wondering if anyone was still running with the vortech,and what kind of numbers there putting down with it.I sold my kit back in like 05 before i got the cobalt and i kinda miss it,lol.The only thing that held me back was the tuning.Had no hp tuners back then,lol.I was wondering if it was tuned with hpt,would it put down some decent numbers.

I am, well technically I'm not for the winter, but the summer cav is still boosted with the RSM kit. While I do not recall my exact wheel horse power I remember doing the math and having it come out to approximately 190hp at the crank at 5 psi. I purchased the exact upgraded inner seal, bearing, and outer seal that Chris Orr used to permanently alleviate his oil leaking issues way back. I also have 370cc injectors and HPT Pro. I'm going to install everything this spring along with a smaller belt to squeeze out another PSI or two. I'm hoping that ditching the FMU for larger injectors, tuning with HPT, and the extra PSI will bring me a little above the 200hp mark. Hopefully we'll find out what I make at this year's bash. As far as reliability and power over stock goes this kit has been great to me. But 200hp doesn't mean much these days, especially with a stock, parasitic, "tall" 3rd gear auto. When the time comes I may upgrade to the GM charger, but for now the RSM kit does its job.

Yea i had those oil issues too back in the day too.I dont know if it was the same guy,but someone had that problem also.I gave him the part numbers for the seal and all was good.Mine put down 199 hp.The only tuning i had then were bigger injectors,fmu and a s-afc.I hear ya that 200 hp is nothing these days.My cobalt is putting down almost 250 and it still feels slow,lol.If i could find a kit for a reasonable price im thinking of getting another one.Nothing beats the sound of a vortech.Sounded like a jet when at cruising speed,lol.

Hi Chris. I still have mine. I ordered the same exact seal and bearing you upgraded to. I put the seal in, but haven't put the bearing in yet. Mine works great as well. Did you ever swap to a smaller belt? I'm maxed out at 5psi and my mechanic tried to fit the 1 inch and 0.5 inch smaller belt, but said he couldn't. The boost limitation is the only real drawback to this kit. Otherwise its a great set up once you get the kinks worked out. I do have a small oil leak from the charger itself though. I've had it from day one. Its coming from the oil return where the hose meets the charger. I don't know if its a problem with a seal in the charger itself or if a rubber hose and screw clamp is insufficient to appropriately seal it off. Its no bid deal as its only about 1/4 of a quart of oil every 3000 miles, but still its a annoyance when you're OCD about your car.
Hey John, I had a custom pulley made by Dynamic Machine here in Winnipeg. It allows me to get 12 psi but I keep it down to 8 psi. I want the engine to stay together! I think I may have the lowest mileage boosted J-Body, I have 15700 km on her. The winters are very long here so the car stays covered in a heated garage all winter. Is the oil return in the oil pan on your car higher than the engine oil in the pan? If not the oil can back up inside the gear case of the supercharger and cause oil leaks and other problems. I am with you I hate having a dirty car. I have even been known to wipe down the underside of the car! Now that's OCD!!

Chris we need to talk lol. People have been trying for years to obtain a pulley that would up the boost in this kit. Taken all together, what you've done with this kit has essentially turned it from the JBO's most despised pre-made kit into a formidable opponent to both the GM charger and the HAHN turbo kits. The pulley you had made, was it a new drive pulley or was it a new supercharger pulley? Also how are you accommodating increased fuel needs associated with the increased boost? How are you limiting the boost to only 8psi? Forgive the onslaught of questions but this is very intriguing to me as you and I are the only ones left with this kit lol. I'll try to post up some pics of the oil return set-up tomorrow. You may be on to something. When you see them let me know if you think the return line is in an inappropriate location. As for 15,700km, that's insane! I thought I had low mileage (106,216km on an 8 year old car).
Thought that may get your attention! I had a new driven pulley machined from high grade billet aluminum took them a week and a lot of calculations to get all the machining perfect. It was not cheap!! The thing I also did not mention is I have had the ECM reprogrammed and larger 370cc injectors along with a higher volume fuel pump .I still run the FMU I know it costs me power but I would rather she run rich than lean. And I'm an old school guy I still like controls I can see, very tough to watch an electron! I modified another by pass valve to maintain/limit maximum flow in the charge pipe. The V9 has step up ratio of 3:45.1 our driven pulley is 5" the stock driven is 1.75" that gives us an impeller speed of approx 30557.14 rpm and approximately 5psi of boost . When the engine rpm is at 6500 rpm. Keep in mind that because our driven pulley is connected to the intake cam shaft the rpm is 1/2 of crank shaft speed. This means we are at less than half of the Absolute maximum rated impeller speed of 65000 rpm. The efficient maximum speed is 60000 rpm.
So here are some of the numbers:
1.75" = 30557.14 RPM 1.625" = 32907.69 RPM 1.563" = 34213.05 RPM 1.500" = 35650.0 RPM 1.438" = 37187.07 RPM 1.375" = 38890.91 RPM 1.313" = 40727.34 RPM
1.250" = 42780.0 RPM 1.188" =45012.63 RPM 1.000" = 53475. RPM
I'll let you figure out the CFM and approximate boost each of these driven pulleys will give you.Oh by the way the V9 spins much faster at idle than with the stock 1.75" pulley so it has a real nice jet turbine sound going on now under the hood not that loose belt squeak.

The hose does seem to be low on the oil pan. The leak is from the fitting that is directly below the charger where the return line hose connects. It leaks and runs down along the hose. There are no other leaks from any of the other supercharger fittings. Do you think this is the cause of the small leak?
I'm impressed with what you've done with this kit. Would you mind telling me how much a custom pulley would cost and if the company that made it for you would be willing to make and ship another? I have 370cc LSJ injectors and HPT pro but I did not install the injectors as the FMU seems adequate to handle fuel needs for 5psi. Did you use HPT to tune your PCM? If so would you be willing to send me your tune? If you have recent pics of your setup I'd love to see them. I really appreciate the insight you've given me. I was seriously considering selling the kit and buying the GM kit simply so I would have the option to get more power. This has reinvigorated my love for the vortech lol.
I would remove the oil return hose from the bottom of your supercharger and with the engine shut off try blowing air into the return hose, at the same time I would listen for bubbling in the oil pan. Next clean the area where the fitting is installed in the bottom of the gear case.Take a small mirror and inspect the area around the fitting for cracks it may be necessary to remove the supercharger and do a close up inspection. Did you use any type of thread sealant on the threads of the fitting? Check the return line for small holes/cracks in the rubber especially in the area that the hose clamp was installed. I used silicone hose on mine as it will last a lot longer than the hose that came with the kit. I have lots of pictures at Car domain my car is called Titillation. I can check for you and see if the machine shop will make another pulley and what the price will be. It was $380.00 plus taxes a couple of years ago when I had mine made.Like I said it was not cheap.I had a friend of a friend who has HPT Pro do the tune but he has moved out west to Alberta. But I will see if I can get a copy of the tune for you.

I'm going to give the smaller belt one last try because if I can get a tight enough grip to see 6 or 7 psi I'm sure that, plus some larger injectors and a good tune, will get me above the 200hp mark. However, if that fails or I decide I want more, its good to know I can get a pulley made that will fulfill my wishes. If you get a hold of that tune, shoot me a PM and let me know. Thanks again.
Hey there, I thought I would never find anyone still using the RSM design. I have built an Ecotec set-up based on the RSM s/c kit. But I am having SO many issues that I am at wits end. If you guys have a few moments I would love to pick your brains. I have solved many of the issues, but am still having some issues.

I too would like be interested in a hi-po pulley for my RSM/Vortech. A replacement pulley or dimensions for a pulley to be made by a local machinist would be of help.
I have had the RSM kit on my '99 Sunfire 'vert since '02 with zero problems.
I installed the kit and had it checked by Nelson and the RSM team at Mississauga in '03.

GlowinCav, you can ask, and I will do my best to answer. I'm a full time graduate student working toward my doctorate in biomedical research, which means I have little free time so it may be a while before I can respond.
Of course I too would be interested in a pulley upgrade for more boost.
One question I have is, if you have a clanking type sound from the drive pulley? I have noticed that there is a small amount of chucking between the drive pulley and the camshaft hex. Are these things normal ?
I have worked my way through almost all of my issues, and I am taking it in for dyno tuning next week. So far, other than the noise it has been great. I love the way the vortechs sound. Not much else like it.
