Misfire, Sputtering?
Sunday, September 20, 2009 9:58 PM
Lately I have been running 9-10psi on my Saab Setup.
Runs perfect once I get into 3rd gear, but when I go WOT in 1st-2nd it, spits and sputters, but keeps accelerating... It almost sounds like tons of firecrackers going off, and what I've been told you can see flames shoot from the cutout off the downpipe when it does that.....

Running too rich or lean, check my plugs?
Is the engine not getting enough fuel? It ran fine like this for a month and when I ran it at the track.
I am running the supercharger tune.

Any help would be great

Sounds most like a fouled plug.

That was my first guess.

Missfiring, check plug gap, and maybe replace the plugs.

I had exactly the same issue this weekend on my m62 cav, and I pulled plugs and checked the gaps all was good, so I swapped in a set of new plugs I had and the problem still existed but when I took it out I threw a code for low catalitic efficentcy... I haven't had time to bolt another one on that I got laying around and see if it fixes the issue since I haven't had time to weld flanges on the cat yet.......just my .02 but I had similar issues when I sprayed my ohv and the cat resolved my issues then.

Are you throwing any codes?

I run without a cat. So always have a CEL, haven't checked to see if it is more than one code though.

How does it run in third gear at a few PSI under peak?

Runs great, tons of pull in 3rd gear

What are you air fuel ratios? That's the first thing you should log to see if it's fuel related or ignition related...

Just to clarify, you're saying it runs great in third boosted under partial throttle, not just WOT?

I had this exact problem breaking up in lower rpm at wot, which was exactly a fouled out plug. I had changed to a different size turbo and not the tune or plugs, which is when it happened.

You should get a wideband if you dont have one, but plugs would be the first place Id check.

But then why is he saying 3rd gear is ok? Can you pull away in 3rd from 1500 RPM smoothly?

3rd gear is fine all the time.
I don't have a wideband, or an extra bung.
So i might just pull the plugs and look

No wideband? Not good. At least get something hooked up to your narrowband so you can see if you're north of 14.7:1.

Why in the hell would you be running a turbo setup on a car that was never originally boosted and not have a wideband? That's just irresponsible man and you're asking for problems. Wideband is the first thing anyone should buy if they are planning to boost a car...

Jimmy I believe he bought the car already boosted off t2 awhile back. I would check plugs first I bet the black from being rich and have soot on them from misfires. The way I check plugs and I how I tune my race car is put a new set of plugs in, go wot run, put it in nuetral and shut the car off( do not let idle) pull the plugs and read em. I also use an otoscope to do this to read air/fuel ratio and check for foreign matter.

Maybe it's best to stay out of boost until you get a wideband. Not even Jesus can tune your car without one.

Car has been boosted for 40,000 miles just fine

Just because it wasn't misfiring until now doesn't mean it was fine. AFRs could have been in the 15's and you wouldn't have had any idea.
