LD9 M45 installed, now misfires
Monday, February 09, 2009 6:01 PM
Ok I just installed the GM M45 on my 01 Z24. I started getting misfire code after the install. Go to were just normal driving it would do it. I replaced the coil housing and boots (mine were orginal). No difference. After that I started logging misfires for each clyinder in HPT. Showing misfires on 1 and 3. I and a friend thought coil. I bought 2 brand new ACDelco coils today installed samething. All I'm left with is the ignition control module. The injectors (310cc) were already on the car before charger and no issues. It is weird this happened right as I installed the charger. Am I missing something?

Sorry should have stated, that I put in NGK TR6's, started gap at .038, after the misfiring started went to .030, still. I can cruise on the interstate at 80mph with cruise set and the CEL is flashing.

Did you un-ground something and forget to re-ground it?

I figured you wouldnt have overlooked something that simple. Oh well, good luck on getting it fixed.

The only actual sensors that are different with the m45 I believe are the iat(bottom of the sc) and the 2-bar map. Try either one?

30 is too small I would go for the 45-50 range and only gap smaller if you run into spark blow out which you should not with the m45

What I would look into is make sure the O-rings that seal the sc to the head are properly seated. I used just a tiny dab of anerobic sealer since it is very tacky to hold them to the sc during the install.

Open the gap back up, John. I personally didn't have a great experience with TR6's... maybe try R42LT5's?

Try with what GM says gap at 0.050, especially with a the new coils and Iridium plugs.

I should have also said I have a 2.5 pulley which is why I gapped down soo much. At this point the gap and the pulley I do not think is making much of a difference, since I get misfires as soon I start driving and get the RPM's up to about 3k.

The IAT and MAP are both reading fine.

I'm starting to think that maybe I did knock a ground off, or some wire. I'm going out of town for work so the car has to wait til probably Sunday now. Going to see if I can borrow a ICM to swap just in case. I will also check for leaks around the charger as well.

I have the 2.5" pulley with tr6's gaped at .50 and the only time I even come close to experiencing spark blowout is when temps are below freezing and I am on it hard and even then I am sure it is spark blowout.

A leaking s/c oring at the head would cause idle problems. Check that ground strap under the IDI, you'd be amazed how that little bugger can screw up driveability.

do you have any logs to look at with hpt?

Put a new set of plugs in?? always sucks when you get a no good new plug and chase your tail assuming they are good. Cheap and easy place to start.
Which cylinder is showing a higher misfire count (the counters are good but not always dead accurate- may occasionaly show a few misfires on the wrong cylinder) Can try swapping injector on affected cylinder and see if the misfire follows that.

Thats what I would do...... I've had bad NGK plugs out of the box before

I don't even have one anymore... it doesn't do anything. The ICM has its own ground wire, no need for the strap.

I will try new plugs.

HPT is showing misfires on 1 and 3, nothing on 2 and 4. I have been told GM allows some many misfires per minute. Just weird that it started after the charger, but I guess the plugs could be it. Thanks for the info and I will let you know.

I had miss-fires up the butt until i dropped gap down to .028.

However the best thing for up top pull i did was the coil swap.

Did you have it under normal driving?

Update:

Tonight I installed a brand new set of TR6's at .040 gap. No change. I then installed a used ICM (loaner from a friend), no change. I have sprayed with carb cleaner looking for a leak, nothing. I'm really lost. New coils, new coil housing, new boots, different ICM, new plugs no change.

I have a thing or 2 to try tomorrow, but almost out of options.

Could it be a fuel injector issue?

Something I have thought about, but the injectors are the same ones I was running N/A and no issues. Still does not mean it could not be.

That may be your problem man, you have new coils, new coil housing, new boots and you are running on a smaller gap. I can understand 0.040 on a untouched engine with over 100K miles. But you have everything new. GM says use 0.050 gap, try that, especially on less resistant iridium plugs.

Lastly, did you check the springs on the coils or spring boots?
