ecotec m62 charger, questions about stock motors holding up
Tuesday, May 27, 2008 4:55 PM
Alright as many know, the fully build m45 project has a sale pending right now. Next project will be a m62 motor. Now as soon as the seller gives me all the money for the car i will be getting a wrecked eco cavalier and fixing it at my dads shop and buying the gm m62 kit, porting it, throwing it on and changing the pulley with a HE.

I'm just wondering how many of you guys have blown up on the stock eco motor while boosting with the m62 kit because i am not playing games with small mods, i need to know a round about max boost before the bottom end goes bang because if thats the case ill build it off the bat.

Thanks.

Depends on your tuning, I blew my 1st motor due to lack of tuning knowledge + a malfunctioning wideband. The stock pulley will yield you around 8 to 10 psi depending on your position.
Now Mileage also plays a big game as well

I am now tuned, heat exchanged and drive the hell out of the car stock pulley (roughly while college semester was still in, 300 miles a weekEND aka over 1000 miles a month).

A lot of guys here are running the 3.0 pulleys with success. Some are even running smaller pulleys than that but I don't agree on that with the stock bottom end. I believe Airtonics blew his, if I'm not mistaken with a 2.8" pulley and Snowman is running a 2.8 right now I think with success.

I personally say with the amount of heat this thing creates and if you want to make "BIG" power, def. a build is in order. Besides none of us have seen what a build eco can do with an m62

with the stock pulley on a mustang dyno I laid down with no heat exchanger,16 or 17 degrees of timing, and an afr of around 10.2-11.5
196 whp.

I am due to go back to the same mustang dyno, ( rather use a mustang again to see the real gains opposed to hopping on a dynojet for bragging rights) to see what the car puts out now with the intercooler hooked up, 19.5 to 20 degees of timing and an afr of 11.5-11.8

sorry no edit button but the stock pulley is around 8 to 10 psi
the 3.1 is approx. 11-12 psi
the 3.0 is approx. 13-14 psi.

i should have my built motor in next month, ill let you know how it goes. heat exchanger should be installed this weekend, if i can swing it, water/meth shortly after. (tuition reimbursement )

the "built" motor im putting in has stock cams, wiseco 10:1 stock bore pistons, eagle forged rods, and a port n polished head, crank is knife edged and 1 lb was taken off when the motor was balanced. ill be using the cobra heat exchanger.

Well, I think you should just keep your car and build an eco to swap in, and sell me your ld9

But if you do sell your car, let me know before you do. Gotta talk to you bout somethin

i'd build it before you swap.
i'm at 98K miles. s/c went on at 97K.

*subcribed and interested...

I guess this is a good opportunity to learn...

When people talk about building engines running a positive displacement style s/c, they say that boost drops when flow improvements are made such as porting the head and installing more aggressive cams. Is this just the natuer of a PD s/c? Given the same pulley diameter it takes a certain pressure to flow a certain volume of air per minute, but when the flow is less restricted, it takes less pressure? Is that the correct way of understanding it?

I understand how boost works with a turbocharger operating efficiently - there is always an excess of pressure bled off by the W/G, so yes increases in flow will increase power, but not decrease boost.

That said, wouldn't an aggressive top end build be a safer way to big power rather than just dropping the pulley diameter?

ported head would have less boost but more power, is what ive been under the impression

well, to answer your questions... wikipedia ftw!

may your question be answered.. ha

I plan on doing ported m62 by myself, HE, 2.9", meth injection and intake and exhaust for starters. I will not be getting a car with anymore than 50k on the odometer because i want some life left. I am not swapping anything, im buying a 02-05 style jbody and modding it, im basically going to see what i can do before she blows then i will fully build it which is what i did with my sunfire m45 motor.

Probably depends on how you treat the car. Some people manage to destroy stock engines with few to no mods while others somehow push the outer limits and have no concerns.

I do a lot of racing and abused the car daily. It lasted for a while, probably longer than it should have but after a week or two of the 2.8 pulley a rod snapped at JCO a few years back. At the end of last season I threw the 2.8 back on another stock motor for a month or so, didn't have any issues and the car was much faster however I wouldn't trust it for an extended period of time.

Like some of the others I'm working on finishing my build so I can see where the limit of this charger is without the kaboom next time.

airtonics, i hope to be with you on that buddy later in the year, we will see.

I seemed to do very nicely with the m45 setup and its time for a new project.

the saab green tops are the same as the cobalt stock green top injectors correct?

Stock pump should be fine for those injectors.

yea they should be but to run a 2.9 pulley with those injectors sounds risky. I'm already at 110 idc with those injectors at redline I could only imagine a smaller pulley.
