Vacuum Line? what is it for?

On the GMPP SC kit for the 2.4L LD9 engine... there is a small vacuum line that goes from the bottom of the SC/manifold, you can see it if you look in the gap between runners 3 and 4 (almost touching the block, pointing straight down). and just connects right back to the SC just after the TB. what exactly is the purpose of this little guy?

Mine fell off at one point and was THE BIGGEST PAIN to get back on... i almost didnt put it back on... so just curious what that guy is for....

It's a PCV line.

If you have a block and/or head to look at you'll see that it (the hole) comes from a hole drilled in the PCV housing in the block up through the head gasket and into the head. Supposedly it lets the vacuum at low idle keep the crankcase vented better.

so what would or could happen if you removed and plugged these?

(i almost did that after about 45 min of trying to reconnect it... i got it back on... but if it falls off in the future i may not be so sure i want to go thru that again)

The purpose of the pcv is to vent pressure in the crankcase when gases bleed past the rings. If you don't vent it, it will lead to extra stress on the rotating assembly which equates to less power. Either hook the vaccum line from the manifold to the pcv as it was intended, or plug the hole on the manifold and run a pcv breather filter on the one from the block.

He's not talking about the big 1/2-5/8" hose. he's talking about the 1/8" plastic line.

Most people that run the 2.3 HO manifold don't worry about that hole (it's not in the 2.3 manifold) and don't seem ti have a problem. The more in-tune (intelligent?) people drill and tap the manifold and run a vacuum line like it should have been there in the first place and claim to have smoother idle.

I thought the PCV hole in the head was between runners 2 & 3, not 3 & 4. Maybe that's why I was misled by what he said.
