I Think Dealership Screwed Me!.?!.!

Hello all,

I Just got my 04 cavi boosted with the gm kit for the 2.2 ecotec. Had my local chevy delership install it.
They did a good job from all i can see from top of engine and it screams like a bitch. But I believe the intake manifold on this kit is supposed to be intercooled with some coolant running from the stock cooling system.. Now i might just be misled but when i was looking at this kit on gmpartsdirect.com it says it was a intercooled kit and it was the intake manifold that had the coolant running through it. Ive did ALOT of research before i purchased this kit through the dealership just to get the reflash for free and all that good stuff it also took them 16 hrs to install it. and kept it all wekend it killed me lol but when i went to pick the car up i asked him about the setup and some details about the work they did. they had some hoses rubbing aginst my fan belt and i had them repair that b4 i left but i saw there was no hoses running to where i believe the coolant runs into and out of the intake manifold amd there still capped off. i asked him about it and he said that the video and the manual said nothing about hooking up an intercooler to coolant but this is the same guy that called this kit a turbo..... during the install. anyway my question is am i right or is this intake manifold not intercooled by the cars antifreeze and if it is is it going to hurt my setup or motor by running it without the intercooling. i also apoligie for my horrible capitalization both of my shift keys are on the fritz bad on my laptop.
oh by the way they also seemed to be skiddish about giving my the intall manual and the video i requested when i left the delership i never got them so if anyone has a copy please let me know. i would like to get a copy. sorry im a noob sc owner im learning lol.

The kit comes ready to be intercooled, it does not come with anything to compete the intercooler setup though, you have to buy a heat exchanger(intercooler) and the pump to flow the coolant threw the manifold. When I did my install I bought a cobra mustang heat exchanger and intercooler pump along with some misc hoses to hook everything up.

here are a couple links to the items on ebay
Heat Exchanger

Pump

yea, it comes non intercooled.

you have to buy the stuff to make it work, its not included w. the kit.

basically the kit is stock stuff from a cobalt ss with does ahve all the intercooler items.

I love how its automatically "I THINK THE DEALERSHIP SCREWED ME". The guy you talked to is not likely who worked on your car. You more or likely talked to a service advisor whom usually know only what they need to know to get by and complete their jobs. Its just very frustrating when people assume dealerships are always screwing them somehow but yet the people who utilize dealerships know little or nothing about what they are talking about hence the reason they took it to a dealer to have work done. Dealerships dont stay in business by screwing people over they stay in business from keeping customer bases. Most dealerships stray from aftermarket installs because 9 times out of 10 people complain about something in which they believe they are educated in but in fact are NOT. As a tech myself it just bothers me when people knock the profession and claim it as a scam of some kind. My advise is to maybe do "A LOT" more research before assuming you were screwed.

If you had done as much research as you claim, you would have fully known that your intercooler wouldn't be functional until you added the necessary heat exchanger, pump, filler tube/reservoir, and wiring for the pump. Don't trash talk people who did THEIR job properly, when you didn't do YOURS to par. You're fortunate enough that the dealership even took on this task, many will shy away from simply doing the reflash, let alone the full install.

Good job making yourself look stupid though, well done!

Just to start off.... I said I THINK the dealership screwed me... I did'nt say anything about actually being screwed out of my install... They did a good job and all i was concerned about was if they had maybe neglected to do something that was gonna damage my engine.. so thanks to the people who were kind enough to give me a non flaming answer it answered my question and i was pleased to know that my dealership did a great job... i mean these people even took my short ram intake and MODIFIED IT to work with this system which i think was way way above and beyond the call of duty. So dont get me wrong i was not by any means attacking the great people at my dealership as a matter of fact it is tri county chevrolet in royston ga. just to give credit where it was due and yes the only person i was able to speak to was the "Advisor" and yes he seemed to be just a desk worker which was frustrating to deal with because i do know what im doing and yes i could have installed this system myself no problem.. and if i had had my hands on the install video and manual i too would have understood that it was not required to run the system. the only 2 reasons i wanted the dealership to install this kit is because 1. if i had did it myself i would have had to put this car on a rollback and take it 25 miles away just to get the reflash done and had to pay for that and 2. i now on this system have a 12 month 12000 mile on the install work and on the kit which is not a whole lot but if after that long anyone would know if the kit was installed incorrectly or if anything else was wrong so thats why i did it. Ive been using jbo for a long time and i have to say its one of the best kept resources for any one type of car i have seen in a long long time so i hate we had to get off on the flaming foot like we did because i respect everyone here and the work they do on this site it has been a big help to me since 2004. i never claimed to be a total expert on the j-body and yes i dont care how much research you do... im only human and i can miss details too... i hope in the future we can all have better communication skills.

I'm surprised no one else said anything yet...just to be clear on this, you mentioned that the engine's coolant runs through the intercooler. This is incorrect and would be a bad idea since the coolant gets pretty hot. The intercooler uses a seperate reservoir with seperate coolant that runs through the front mount heat exchanger to keep it cool.

Did you say it took them 16 hours to do the install? With a lift and air tools and GM expertise?

Wow. Bill.. we should go into business installing superchargers in under 8-9 hours on Eco's and under 2.5 on LD9's. On a driveway with hand tools no less...

16 hours x the usual $100+ an hour at the stealership = $1600 to install... We're being too nice charging $300!!!!

Your car is fine - enjoy it. The hoses near the serpentine belt issue is common since it's really tough to get them ziptied out of the way on the first shot.... those hoses are damn close and you need to pay close attention after the first drive to ensure everything stays the way you expect it to. (Just the fact GM relies on zipties instead of a custom bracket is scary enough lol)

I was just going to say that but you beat me to it.

yeah i knew the hoses were real close but they had it fixed for me b4 i left the shop they did a super job i just got the boost guage hooked up today and i can push 10 psi at 4000 plus rpm which is bad ass. i read about the hoses shortly after i had gotten home after the install and realised it was a common problem... im thinking about hooking up that heat exchanger system closer to summer.. heres a new question 4 u guys.. i have a excessive amperage custom 200 amp alternator coming very soon and i think its gonna be very hard or impossible to install the alternator on the car now that the charger is on.. can anyone elaborate on what the best way to go about it would be? am i going to have to remove the charger itself to get to it. or can we come in from the bottom

16 hours is a long time to do an install. I have not done the s/c kit but i have done the stage 2 kit for a cobalt ss and that includes taking off the supercharger and because im an idiot i droped some bolts in the intake and had to take that off to to get them out but all that including injectors and reflash only took me 3 hours.

^^^ I think they charged 16 hours. If I'm not mistaken, that's the flat rate time GM pays the tech (and charges the customer) for the s/c install and reflash. It probably didn't take the tech that long.
I had a lot more things to say (assuming the dealership screwed you, running engine coolant through the i/c core, etc.), but they've already been said. No reason to beat a dead horse.

not to put a dealer down but the published labor time is 4.0 to install the supercharger package.
It shows this when you go on epic and look under the description for the part number 17800003(the supercharger package).

so if you paid 16 hours they DIDNT know what they were doin or they just wanted to bend you over.

Part Description

GM Part Number: 17800003
SUPERCHARGER PKG,ENG *INSTALL 4.0

im pretty sure when we had contacted GM racing division about the SCer kit for the 2.2 ecotec they also said something like 16 hours for the install but that was also when it first came out.

I called 3-4 stealers and they all said between 4-5 hours estimate....So that probly means max of 5-6 that I would be willing to pay for!!

This is a big problem gm faces. Most dealerships are clueless to the fact that these parts even exist let alone how to figure how much to charge to install them. Also when you search the GM performance catalog it does not say how much state a labor time for install.

heres the answer, get some buddies and install it yourself, and this is not refering to the OP, if you have the money i would have had the dealership install the charger on my car too
