Alpine Developments turbo for the Ecotec 2.2
Monday, July 23, 2007 5:46 PM
I was surprised to find nothing on the search for one of these Alpine turbo kits for the Ecotec.

I know the reason almost no one has supercharged or turboed 2.2s is because of the tuning.

The pre-programmed piggyback ECU used on this turbo conversion is very interesting and seemed to be a point of bashing on www.yourcobalt.com

Does anyone have one of these kits? Pros? Cons?

This country is now run by Socialist(Communist) crimminals. You might not be able to get very good support with their products down the road. My 2 cents.

I am talking about the 05+ Cobalts and Saturns, the give away was that Alpine only has it for 05+ Ecotecs.

I have an 07 2.2 Ecotec Cobalt and no one has tuning for it, only piggyback ECUs are being used to make these recognize the turbo or supercharger.

I wish HP Tuners would wake up.

I think that's only for the Delta Bodies.

Mike, again, I'm going to remind you that you're asking Cobalt (read: Delta-Body)-specific questions on a J-body forum. While yes, the engines are similar, and some people on here do have cobalts you will have much better luck with your queries on CobaltSS.net. The reason your search didn't bring anything up is because that kit is for Cobalts, so no one has one on their cavalier.

Good point...

I am usually here just for my wife's 03 Sunfire, but I thought there would be some Cobalt owners that might have tried one of these Alpine kits, or explain to me the pros and cons of a piggy-back ECU.

My Cobalt is stock, and will not remain this way long.

As for the Sunfire, it has all the exhaust 2 1/4 but it needs a header. That GM supercharger kit will be perfect when they finally figure out the newest reflash, but I wont get one until they do come up with a fix.

I hope GM will make a similar kit for the Cobalt 2.2 soon. I might go that route, as I am not realy needing the car to break records, I just want something that will have a 0-60 under 7 seconds so I can get in and out of traffic with ease.

Thanks for the inputs.

^^^ Cobalt Owner.

The only models that need a solution to tuning are the 2005-2006 2.2L LS, LT, and LTZ models. The 2007's switched back to the same ecu used in the cavaliers and Sunfires.

There are a few issues or delimas with the supercharger kit listed for the Cavalier and why it won't fit on your cobalt...
- Even though the Cobalts and Cavalier's have the same motor, the design or layout is different.
- The Cavalier Supercharger kit release the air intake towards the driver side of the car or engine bay.
- The cobalts have the intake facing the passenger side of the engine bay. Obviously with a lot of fabrication you could get it to fit, but it's more work then I would advise.

For this reason, there are very few Cobalts (Non-SS) that have supercharged... too much work for a car that you could have purchased supercharged already.

Now onto the turbo part and Alpine Kits...
They use a side mount intercooler which is fine for low boost systems. They do use a piggy-back ECU, but from what I have read has it's own issues with tuning. The ECU comes pretuned, but from there it sits. It's basically like a dealer flash, it's been upgraded but you personally can't do anything with it. Obviously bigger injectors (I would hope so... we ran HPtuners just for the Datalog and the IDC was nearly 128% on a stock cobalt!!! Hence the recall for cracked fuel rails and injectors .

***For those who don't know IDC stands for Injector Duty Cycle. This tells the reader bascially at what capacity the fuel injectors working in order to supply enough fuel.

Tuning is the only thing holding down those who wish to turbo really. Alpine has a make shift solution, but tuning is rather iffy quality... My suggestion give it until the spring of 08'. Have been doing a lot, A LOT of reading and there is a company that has cracked the code on our ECU's... it's not HP Tuners, but they have teamed up with Hann to produce a turbo kit... they are just waiting on Hann to give it the green light to roll production.

Hope this helps a little...

Advice for those J-body owners thinking of upgrading to a cobalt... Get an 07 or newer to save on headaches.... also the 07' is the last year that the SS S/C will be in production as it is being remove in the 08' line up to meet the new emissions regulations going into effect as of 2010.

I stand corrected, the 07's did switch back to the E37 Ecus found in the Cavaliers, but HPtuners is working on programming. Should be out by the end of the year.
