Eco Oil Return... how do you drill it?
Sunday, April 29, 2007 7:47 PM
Okay I've spent about the last 6 hours figuring out where to put my oil return line. I've been reading it's half and half oil pan and block girdle. I was looking at the girdle, and I physically see no possible way to drill that thing properly. Did you guys drill from the engine bay, or from under the car drilling blind? I'm very confused.

It definitely looks like the better solution, but the oil pan looks a LOT easier to me, seeing as I have it off already and can have it done professionally for free.

Thanks!

I am going to take mine off and have a bulkhead fitting welded onto it.

My problem's not with the oil pan though, it would be easy to have a little block welded on for tapping... I'm just weighing my options to see if it is possible even to drill the girdle.

Thanks though

why would you weld on a little block and tap it when you could just get a fitting welded on instead?

Okay, well since I've got a few peoples attention. Have you ever had any problems with oil when using the pan? Did you go into it at an angle?

Thanks

I did it in the block girdle from under the car... I drilled a bit, then I went to see if my angle is ok from the engine bay, etc... took me 20 min to drill this small hole lol

The oil pan itself would be much easier to tap but your drain line needs to be open and allow easy flow. Using the tap spot on the back of the girdle makes more sense and you wouldn't have to worry about your return being blocked by oil in the pan. If you have already taken off the pan, just drill and tap the spot on the girdle. Have someone there to help you as this is a tough spot to get a drill(of any decent size) and to watch the angle of the drill. You can then tap it and use a 45 degree fitting that will work with your return line.

Thanks, I guess I'm gonna have to yank out the turbo yet AGAIN to make some room back there to work... EUGH!

Here is only pic of the under side. It is a 90' fitting -08 / 3/8npt. First you need to remove the pan. The hole is drilled above the drain plug, about 3 inches. When you have it off you will see the pickup, make sure you are above that. I also "JB Welded" the fitting in place. I'll what I can do for a better pic for you.

I had mine in my block and went to my pan. MUCH easier to work with. Plus my return line was so short it was kinked...

Thanks guys, I decided to go with the pan. I'm debating now whether to have a fitting welded in, or just a block and tapping it... Anyways thats a minor detail.
