Wasgates, Down pipes, and Exhaust
Sunday, April 01, 2007 4:02 PM
ive been doing alot of reading on here lately to try to narrow down my options for when i start my turbo progect. I have a 95 2.3L cavy.
Im gonna be running an external WG. Ive herd of people running them back into the exhaust system or sometimes not. I was wondering which of these setups sound more "turbo'd"? Also for the 2.3L, i dont plan on running anymore than 8psi on stock internals. What is a better option for exhaust sizes. Should i go with 2.5" because of my low boost levels, stock engine, and no other mods to speak of, or should i go with 3" to help my turbo breath/spool up better?

Running a wastegate dumped, or not plumbed back into the exhaust, wil be very loud any time there's boost because your WG bleeds off excess pressure. If you want a street car I'd plumb it back into the exhaust.

2.5in should work for your exhaust.

The wastegate dump sounds pretty awesome though. My buddy is running an external on his setup and it sure does add to the turbo sound. Kinda makes me want to kick myself for selling my Tial. You should be fine running a 2.5" exhaust.

~Boost. Its what's for dinner!~

Like Team Vision Racing said, however you choose to route the exhaust is up to you. If you do decide to route it back to the exhaust system, try and keep it farther away from the downpipe.

Boost levels vs Exhaust size on turbocharged vehicles don't really go hand and hand. The point of increasing the exhaust size on a turbocharged setup is the decrease backpressure which will help increase the efficiency of the turbine's spooling. Whether you run a 2" or a 4" exhaust, your turbocharger will still work fine.

I think by "spool up better" he meant that it'll spool faster with the lower backpressure of the larger 3" piping. This would be correct.

I understand what you're saying. Wasn't sure if he was trying to compare his possible exhaust size to the amount of air pressure he's looking to run, that's why I was clarifying.

Question, if you don't plumb the wastegate exit back into the exhaust system, where does all of the exhaust it bypasses go? Won't it endup inside the car and kill you from carbon monoxide poisioning? Now if you are talking about the blowoff valve that's different, not hooking it back to the inlet side of the turbo will make it louder when you let off the throttle and it's safe to vent to the atmosphere but not the wastegate it definatley needs to be routed back into the exhaust system.

my wastegate isn't plumbed back into the exhaust... i'm not dead...

the wastegate doesn't open when you're not boosting.. so when you're at idle all the exhaust is going through your regular exhaust pipe..

the only time the wastegate opens is when you're driving and getting into some real boost and generally at that point you definitely have some speed, and generally people don't have huge gaping holes from the firewall into the car.

it's a nonfactor in my head.

That's why you route the dump pipe down and out the side of the car genius.

It doesnt really matter to me how loud it is, but i was just wondering how much louder it is? does anyone have or know where i can find some sound/video clips of dumped vs. routed back into exhaust?

Well that's fine you guys are entitled to run your setups anyway you want but for me on my daily driver I will route mine back into the exhaust system.
