When I blew up my first motor, I blew the ring lands off of all four pistons. When I pulled the head, only one of the valve areas suffered damage. The other three were virtually untouched. My plan was to use the cylinder head off my other motor, but if anyone has been following my ongoing troubles, that motor threw a rod. I just pulled the head on that one today, and turned out the piston came up and smacked the head. There are some good gouges, and the 2 of the exhaust valves are bent. Now my idea is to use the head from the first motor that blew up. No bent vales, except for the damage that can be seen in the pic. Can I run it like that, or should I have it repaired? I don't even know if that is repairable, let alone who would do it. Basically from what I can tell, there are just those gouges and chunks missing that you can see in the pic. No damage to the valve seats at all. The gouges are about an 1/8" deep at the worst. What do you guys think?

Therein lies the problem. I spent every last penny on this motor rebuild. I don't have an extra $250 laying around for a rebuilt head. That's why I am asking if this one is salvageable.

Yeah thats still "good" but its going to need to be fixed first. Basicly all thats going to need to be done is deburring the combustion chambers to get rid of the damage. That would be your minimum fix. Its in the quench aria of the chamber so that would be a easy fix too.
You could also have it welded to fill in the gouges then ground down to your stock chamber cc. Another option is deburring all the chambers as much as the damages one to keep all the cylinders equal all the way across.

Have you even checked the valve seats of the thing? They're probably mashed to crap from the chunks of metal that have gone through there.
Get a new one. They're cheaper than blowing your engine AGAIN.
If you don't have $250 for a very basic no brainer thing that you should replace, you're into the wrong hobby bud. No offense.

Whoa...no need to get hostile. I simply asked if it was repairable or not. That would have been sufficient. And then to tell me I'm in the wrong hobby because I can't afford $250, #$*@ off! I can probably speak for 75% of JBO members here, and say that we aren't all made of money. There is a reason most of us are driving J-Body's. I just blew over $2,000 on this motor build, and I am FLAT out broke. I didn't exactly have a head in my budget when I planned this build, so I used the money elsewhere. I was simply asking to see if I can save a little money, since I am paying my way through college which isn't exactly cheap either.
Thanks Atomic, I managed to contact a machine shop today, and they said the same as you. Actually, most heads that you buy that are remanufactured, have similar damage to this, including cracks, scores, holes, etc., all of which are welded and repaired. Almost all remanufactured heads had some damage to them at one time. However, seeing the time constraints, I don't have time to send this head out to get repaired. I think I am going to take both heads down to the scrap yard along with my block and crank that are shot, and get some money for the scrap metal. That should offset some of the cost of a reman head.
With that being said, anyone know of any decent places to get a remanufactured head at a decent price? I can get one from a scrap yard, but then I will have to get it cleaned. I already found one locally for $225 which has been pressure checked and also shaved.
My next question is, will I have any clearance issues with a shaved head, and using a stock thickness head gasket? My Wiseco pistons to have valve pockets. Thanks in advance.
