Turbo Identification...???
Friday, March 02, 2007 10:32 PM
Ok my one friend just gave me a brand new turbo and I am having one heck of a time trying to figure out what size the compressor housing is. The exhaust housing has these numbers impeded into it

First off it is made by TURBONETICS
The numbers are - 20358-03 .63 STG III

I am guessing it is a stage 3 with a .63 exhaust turbine but I cannot find one sigle number on the compressor housing so for that I do not know what size it is and If it is better than the t3 turboXS turbo I got now. I want to figure it out so I know if it has to much lag or the same roughly as the one i have been using I noticed that this one is bigger and has the same downpip hookup aswell.

the 20357 is a 0.48 not a 0.63 (I assume it is on ebay) turbonetics website lists that casting as a 0.48 although some have the 0.63 castin beside the T3 flange (it is incorrect).
the 20357 has 3 variations 1,2,3 (stages)

for compressor you can remove the housing and measure the inducer and exducer (inlet/outlet) of the wheel then do inducer (divide by) exducer = trim... the housing a/r should be stamped on the inside of the outlet. :cheers

Ok so then the numbers imprinted in the cats\\stings are wrong then when it says 63 trim on the exhaust housing???

Also this turbo looks alot bigger than my other one so I have some reason to think that it is a 63 trim
because my other one is a 48 trim so I think the 63 parts is right.

I will measure out the compressor housing and get back to you and let you know what size it is.

Also if this is a 63 trim would that mean it will have more lag than my 48 trim turbo and if so how much lag?

I want a fast spool turbo but also one that could handle maybe like 21 psi of boost without quick failure.

we are not talking trim, we are a/r size... the housing from 0.48 a/r to 0.63 a/r is exactly the same.

and measuring the a/r size is next to impossible. trim is super simple.

I double checked with the numbers and this is the turbo I have.

.63 trim Stage III Standard 20358-3

Ok now this being known how much turbo lag would this give compared to my
other 48 trim turbo or is there really no lag difference???

generally going from a 0.48 to a 0.63 you can expect 10-15% more lag.

totally worth it for the highend gains... when you are pushing your car, it will be in higher RPM's, thats where the 0.63 makes more power :cheers
