Ok I am doing some research through dealerships on some spark plugs for the 2.4L w/GM S/C.
The kit provides us with part # 5613717 which translate to AC Delco R42LTS. Correct?
Now
AC-Delco has a bunch of plugs that are superior (electrode material wise) then what the kit provide. One is platinum, two is Rapid fires, three is Iridium.
Well, I am looking for Iridium plugs and we tried to cross reference and found out there are no such plugs for R42LTS. (If you find one, please let me know)
So then I look for the second best: Rapidfires. But here is what I found out, for a long time the site has been telling people to use Rapidfire #5, but when in fact we should be using
Rapidfire #8. Remember this Rapidfire is what is equivalent to the one provided by the kit's.
Now does anyone know if Rapidfires can be had in Iridium? I know there was thread on something similar where the newer one used a better electrode material, but i do not know the results on it.

ive got ngk iridiums for mine , havent used them yet , my tr6's are still good
since gm switched to ngk , it might be easier to get ngk's in what your looking for
id tell you the # on mine but i gotta gooutside and its cold out , lol
I have the 2000 LD9 with GM S/C and a NX kit.
After talking with
Kristopher Zdral
Technical Support Representative
NGK Spark Plugs (U.S.A.), INC.
at 1-877-473-6767 prompt #2 for assistance
I am running NGK TR6IX P/N3689 (Iridium plugs) which I bought at the local advanced auto. As per NGK recommendation I gapped them at .035. Running good to date.
Additionally; I have the Nitrous Express NXL kit
Kris recommended going 2 steps colder if I boost and use larger nitrous shots. NGK TR7IX P/N3690 gapped to .035, which I also bought at advanced auto. Have not installed yet because I started a motor rebuild for winter.
Hope this helps,
Don
^ Are the NGK TR6IX P/N3689 replacement for the AC delco R42LTS?
TY by the way.

yup figured you woulda been informed of that
it happened when GM started with the lay offs with delphi , some part of it had to do with their spark plug line , and now their plugs are out sourced to NGK
ive got the iridum eco plugs in my g/fs cav , you pull them outta the box and they look like ac delco's , but the metal part of the plug has ngk #'s
You may already know this but here it is,
Kris warned not to use a wheel type gap gauge on the NGK TR plugs. The tips have been getting damaged a lot as the wheel gauges press on them.
Yes, I have a tool for that, in which it will never touch the electrode. TY by the way.
Would you know if NGK's TR6IX are replacement for the Delco's R42LTS?

I knew on Delco's down-sizing with mostly their electronics section and I knew that some GM products used NGX plugs, but I did not know that Delco "passed the torch" (so to speak) to NGK to manufacture plugs under the Delco name.

Yep, also, if you buy a Delco filter and its in a "fleet" box, it was made by Quaker state, but the individual boxed filters are still GM

I am not sure which exact plug the Delco R42LTS is, but from talking with Kris at NGK I know this,
TR5IX = Stock replacement plug for LD9 (N/A) factory gapped at .040
TR6IX = 1 step colder replacement plug for LD9 (G/M S/C kit) gap at .035
TR7IX = 2 steps colder replacement plug for LD9 (high boost/N2O) gap at .035
Kris is very willing to help, if you call him he can get more technical and ref that Delco #

Well, I just put GM's Rapidfire #8 in and immediately noticed a difference.
The package says they are performance spark plugs, which is good to know.
Start up in cold was just as good if not better then the ones GM's S/C supplied. But the kicker is, when the engine is burning hot, it starts on the first crank! That was never the case on the stock ones nor on the GM's S/C supplied ones.
Throttle response improved and there is a better feeling through out the rev-band. And looking at the tailpipe, it looks cleaner then before, so this is telling me the combustion is complete and burning clean, which means more oomph.
Not to forget idle is great with no misfires.
Now the only thing to watch is the gas mileage and if it improved, that will come at a later date. So far i did 5 WOT runs to 3rd gear and gas gauge needle has not moved.
Also no CEL either and I have them gaped to 0.050.
Plus they were $1.98 per plug!
Update will come at a later date.

great to hear,
my TR7's are like that with the 2.2 coils. but i had to gap them at .030 becasue i rev out to 7000, and with the watter injection it would sometimes missfire.

Thanks.

The rapid fire #5's where spec for the 2.3 engines....... but worked fine in the 2.4....... the Rapid fire #8s are 2.4 spec.
Make sure you dont pick up the Platinum Rapid Fire plugs (gold trimmed box), pick up the Copper Rapid FIre plugs (silver trimmed box)..... at least for boosted engines....... I made that mistage once.

If I am reading all this correctly you are saying if I go to GM and buy a set of Rapidfire #8 plugs I should notice a difference. I am currently using the NGK tr6 plugs gapped @ .035 Also I need to make sure I get the Copper Rapid FIre plugs (silver trimmed box) Please correct me if I am wrong. Thanks Wade
FORGET GIRLS GONE WILD WE HAVE GOVERNMENT SPENDING GONE WILD!
Seriously, I don't think GM/Delco offers a copper one.
Check here.
The #8s are equivalent to the ones found in the GMPP's kit (likethe initial thread says). Punch in the kit's S/P # and you will get #8s. I gaped them to the kit's specs and that is 0.050.
More than a month has passed and the car is running excellent. I even achieved 34mpg on the hwy with it which is up 3mpgs for me. Cold start ups are perfect (half a crank) and when it is hot it only takes a full crank. Best yet i am seeing a lot less carbon deposit on my tips, which leads me to believe the combustion is complete and it is better then before. Not to mention, no misfires from idle to redline (no CEL as well).
For $1.98 per plug and AC Delco stamped, you can't go wrong.

I had a set of Non-Platinum Rapid Fire #5's in the drag car (2.3)....... and the catalog at Farm and Fleet showed a Rapid Fire #8 copper.....
If the Rapid Fire #8 is listed in the catalog as the OEM replacement plug for the LD9, what is the 'Colder' Rapid Fire plug?

Copper ones must have been left overs, as the Delco site does not mention them.
Rapidfire #8 are NOT OEM replacement, but rather the replacement for the sparkplugs found in the GMPP kit (AC Delco R42LTS). Rapidfires are not available for the 2.4L OEM plugs.

GM has both copper and platnum rapid fire plugs. the short number ( the AC delco number ) is the same for both, but the GM (long number) is diffrent.

This is an update, but now it's for the AC-Delco Iridium Spark Plugs.
These are the replacements or equivalent to the kit's AC-Delco R42LTS.
So if you want Iridium and by AC Delco go by
ACDelco# 41-101.
http://www.acdelco.com/parts/sparkplugs/iridium.jsp
I've bought a set, and I'm anxious to try them out.
