I found this on another J site. Does anyone have any information on this kit? Did it ever go into production? Where can i find one? will i have to custom make it or can i buy it off the shelf/junkyard?
thanks

Anyways, that was basically one of the test turbo motors that Oldsmobile/GM made, back in the late 1980's. GM/Olds were testing the possibility of releasing a turbo 2.3 quad4, the idea however eventually fizzled out. You can't find that setup at all. That's basically just one of the few pictures, that's circulating around, the net. I think it's running some version of a Garrett T3. It was simple to the point and would've worked really well, too bad.
No you can't get it anywhere, unless if you find some old GM/Olds guy that hijacked one of the setups before they were all supposed to be..... destroyed.

wow that really sucks. got any ideas on how to make that rectanglular thing on the left side ontop of the valve cover?

how to make that thing? I would say start learning to fabricate with aluminum tubing and sheet metal. Grab a welder and start gettin' fancy with it.

Somebody wanna host the pic somewhere else and post it?
WOW..that would be nice to get ahold of that intake....looks like its got a progressive diameter reduction plenum after each runner, the runners look different aswell. I'd really like to look at it.
Damn, thats hot.

Thats awsome. Im sure someone could make that.
Changing the plugs would be annoying though

Go to Indianpolis, that picture is from the Indy 500 hall of fame museum.

I see two things wrong with that set up. First the intercooler is going to end up behind the rad. Second the the charge pipe going on top of the motor will get easily heat soaked.
way to smash dreams hahah atleast you told me before i went in tried it.

i dont think the charge pipe running over the top of the cylinder head would hurt you that much..........my setup uses a similar route of piping for the hot side only it goes to a front mount intercooler rather than one being behind the radiator. i dont have any problems with heat soak in my setup, i also have a 30"x9"x3" intercooler and it does pretty well. check out pics of my setup in my profile..........just did it all this summer and ive never seen anyone else on the org with the same setup....i made the charge pipes all myself with mandrel u-bends from summit racing...came out nice
ya, what does GM know about racing, maby thay shold hire you spddmon,
think about this,
cars going 40 MPH, air is coming through the rad, do you really think its going to be that alot hotter than if it befor the rad?
also, being a early W body, that intercoller may be lower than the rad anyway.

If your going through the trouble of fabbing up an intercooler setup why would you cut corners and put it behind the rad. Your not always doing 40 mph, so when your waiting to stage at the strip that intercooler is going to get a lot hotter with the rad fan blowing on it then if it was infront of the radiator. And their isn't room to fit a tall intercooler like that under a W body rad. If they wanted to go that route a side mount would have made more sense.
Daniel Ksiazkiewicz - your right it actually not that bad considering its the hot side of the intercooler.

thats a nice set-up. why does everyone remove the valve cover?

I'm guess the reason GM put the intercooler there is the same reason Mazda puts theirs ontop for their new 2.3L turbo motor, ease of building. If they can just pump out fully assembled engines and drop them in like normal with out any pipe routing, they can save time and money. It will also fit into cars like the n body and L body with no modification for a fmic.

It looks like he swaped to a set of MSD coil packs so it wasn't nessissary to have on any more as it doesn't cover your valves but holds your coil packs.

The intercooler was lower than the rad. The L body and the cutlass body had the quad low in the engine bay.
Also, the charge pipe would not get heat soaked. The cover doesn't get hot enough for that.

The plaque at the bottom mentioned that that was a pace car. This wouldn't be the first time GM built a hot-rod version of a car for the pace car that never made it into production. Turbo Super-Duty 4 in the Fiero for '84 anyone?
Still, that is a very nicely done turbo set up.

Sleeper style, they don't see it coming that way.

is that a easy mod? do you can anything from it?

There are plenty of fast GN's which used the factory mounted IC behind the radiator. It's not my first choice, either. But it's there for a reason.
Don't bet that GM doesn't know what they're doing. Moving the IC to the front of the rad lowers intake temps and changes emissions. It's easier to get lower emissions and better mileage (both are important to GM) with warm air. This goes along with water heated throttle bodies and intake manifolds, also common finds in the 80's and early 90s GM engines. You're looking at "old tech" in that picture.

I've always loved that pic...... the one piece intake and hot pipe always puzzled me......... but it at least looked cool
