Help on Turbo HO Setup
Thursday, July 20, 2006 5:36 AM
Hi all,

I have searched but haven't found all the information I need. This is somthing I want to do and take my time on, but I want to know what I'm getting into first...

i have recently purchased a 2.3HO and plan on building it all winter and droping it in next spring. I would like to fully build it and turbocharge it. I will install an intercooler and bigger injectors.

My question is,

What pistons would be best for boost? im looking into low compression but not sure how low I should go.

how much boost would I be able to run on forged pistons and rods?

will the stock computer (from the GTZ) take the boost or will modifications need to be made there. I was thinking HP tuners on stock ECU but I have no clue on how to tune.

any other suggestions are apreciated.

Thanks guys.

Also,

where is a good place to buy rods and pistons for this application?

Why use the 2.3 if you are going to build it?

Anyway, HPT will not work on an ECU from earlier than 97. Rods I'm not sure of where to get, but if you email karo@carcustoms (dot) net then he can get you pistons.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!

What do you mean by that?

and about HPT, what I meant was keep my ecu from my sunfire (97) and use that with the 2.3, if its possible, the problem with that if it would work, is i dont have the slightist idea of how to tune.

thanks for the info on the rods, i'll e mail him now.

hey maybe I can shed some light here. The 2.3 is a great motor and I believe better for boost (and high HP) than the 2.4. more high HP part available, much better flow stock, higher redline, no oiling issues..

If you can pull the motor with ALL the sensors still attached to their perspective holes that will give you an idea which pulgs go where. you'll see most are in the same spot as the 2.4. Most everything should bolt in fine. The big hickup in this swap is the cam position sensor. this has been discussed before and the part found here should obtain the proper cam sync the ecu needs.

you WILL need HPTuners in order to get the most from this motor. With the bigger injectors and higher redline the 2.4 computer wont run it well. it will be interesting to see what numbers can be made N/A on these things. the 2.3 also has much stronger rods than the 2.4 so it can take a pounding in stock form.

there is alot of tuning involved with using HP tuners tho and i dont have the patience to do it, or money to have somone do it, so to take the easy route I was gonna just use the ECU out of the beretta doner car. makes things somwhat easier (in theory to me). Maybe if im locky by springtime (when i do the swap) somone will have a good file for the HO swap and i'll got he HP tuner route.

how about ratio for compression for boost, whats good? I was told 9:1 should be ok.

to me the swapping out the whole car's wiring is not easier then going the lego's route of using the 2.4 wiring. I have the two books right in front of me and most of the stuff is plug and play (3-4 plugs are not used on the HO). also what are you gonna use to tune the 2.3 with boost? stock the computer wont handle it. you'll need a tuning solution anyway. why not bite the bullet and get the best solution we have? if you wanna boost it you'll need to learn to tune to some degree. if you are not patient enough to tune then don't boost or you'll watse a bunch of money and your car will be a paper weight. i will prolly go the Eco route but if some complications come up i will go HO. then you'll have a file to use

10:1 is fine for boost, just tune it well and run 93.

I know mantapart is not popular around here but you can get a nice GTU block (oil jets like the 2.0 ECO) and a forged crank for $1k total. then grab some eagle rods and forged pistons and you have yourself a damn strong bottom for about $2k with machining. cam gears and top end stuff are easier to find. I think the 2.3 is hands down a better way to go then the 2.4 for HIGH HP (400+). if your goals are not that lofty the 2.4 is just fine and more prevelant. the crank is very strong, but I am paranoid and would rather build for 600HP to run 500HP.

you do have a good point. I would love to learn how to tune and thats the route i would like to go. i will definitely look into that as a solution.

as for boost, how much is safe to run on a forged rods and pistons at 10:1? I would like to be somwhere in the 300 HP range (if its possible of course)

I can't really answer that question.. nor can anyone else really. depends on how safe you wanna be. BUT, I will say for 300HP, pistons, rods, oil work, and some top end work on a 2.4L with a good tune will get you there. No need to swap to the 2.3 for 300HP, but you would get there with less boost, and won't need as much work internally. hope I helped.

definitely helped, thanks alot. well i have the 2.3 already int he beretta stilla nd its sooooo powerfull lol i love it. so im forsure going the 2.3 route, just cuz i cant have my car out of commission for too long. so build the motor all winter drop it in the spring, tune it all that good stuff. take a bout a week im going to guess. ( i dont have a garage...)

but thanks for the help guys.

any other hints or tricks?

thanks
