New engine and s/c
Wednesday, July 12, 2006 10:38 AM
Now that i have all my suspension basicly done i want to work on my engine. I want to buy a brand new engine to work with and build it from the ground up. Were is a good place to buy crate engines?

Also this is the s/c kit i have to work from correct?
http://www.paceperformance.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=237

I have a 96 cava

I looked in the sticky and found links to guys who posted all the parts i need to buy on top of the kit to get it to work on my car. I just want to get a new engine and internals and do it right the first time

Thanks for advice.

SO let me get this straight. You want a brand new motor (never ran) so you can build it? If so why? It will cost you about 3k from a dealer to get a brand new motor. PacePerformance sells them as well for around $1500.00. If you are going to build the motor get a used, blown motor and build it cost much less.

^^ Exactly, I bought my motor and trans for 700.00 with 60,000 miles on it, tore it down, collected parts for abut 4 months, engine shop at the engine for 2 months(ughh) now im putting it all back together. Buy a motor from a yard, tear it down and build it up like that.. Will cost you much less going that route.

What are your plans for the motor? If you are tearing a motor apart then everything should be new, when your done. If you are going to build a motor for boost then you want new piston's, rods etc... The only thing that would not be new is the crank, and you can buy that without a whole motor. I would even suggest buying a blown motor from someone off the org. People are always selling motors that nedd rebuilt. You willbe wasting some serious money on a new motor and wasting a good motor as well.

read up on building motors more and u will see why buying a brand new motor would be very stupid.

You say you want to build your new crate from the ground up, but building from the ground up means you have to tear it down first.. That being said, its the same as building a blown motor and building that with brand new stuff.. Once you tear down your brand new motor, you wont be using those internal parts anyway.

I just dont get why you say you wanna use new stuff, then tear it apart to put MORE new performance stuff in it.

Like everyone said, you will be spending more money. Either way, you're going to have a pile of stock engine parts you won't be using when you are done building it, so you might as well spend as little as possible on those parts.

i think he is talking about wanting a new block it self...and my words of advice as far as that goes is go and get a blown motor....tear it apart, and wash it...send it to the machine shop and you will have a "new" block to begin on...its your best bet, cheapest bet, and if you pull it yourself, its your easiest bet...

^^ ya that. I just don't want take chance of the block being messed up. The only bad part is i have to have a shop do i tall cuz i don't have hte know how. I looking to drop 10 grand into the motor..

It shows you do not fully understand or have the know how to do this. That was not meant as a flame towards you. In any engine build you should have the block hot tanked, and checked. They can check the block to make sure it has not issues. Truly unless it has a hole in the side of it, and if it is still stock internally you should not have any issues.

ur right i dont' understand.. thats why i was thinking buy new engine and won't have to worry about checking everything cuz its brand new.

Thats also why i am having a shop do it all Basicly i want to buy all the parts and drop it off at the place and say.. do it

once again you arnt going the be the one checking it, the machine shop is. THEY will hot tank it, THEY will check for cracks, THEY will bore the block out if anything is wrong.
and have you evne priced anything out?? if you manage to spend 10k on a motor you will at that point manage to get totally railed in the ass.

Again I'm not trying to flame you, but help you. Truly regardles if the motor is brand new or not if you take everything to a shop and say build it with these parts, if they did that without checking the block for problems, then you do not want them building your motor. Regardless of age when building a motor you should inspect all parts.

You can get good running motors from the junkyard also, does not mean its blown just cuz it came from a wrecked car.

He is correct. Blown motor does not mean the block is cracked. Many things can make a motor be blown. Check the classifieds for people seeling motor, someone is always selling one.

I bought a junkyard motor/trans/supercharger with only 22K on it, runs great! The only problem I had was the DIS was fuct and the wiring harness was aswell. Other than that, the motor and trans and charger run beautifully.

Make sure you look into what you are doing when you build it. If you are goin with the m45 charger then I wouldn't suggest lowering compression, maybe even raise it by a half, make sure the oiling system is up to par. etc etc etc.

In acouple weeks, im going to have a 96 Z24 engine for sale. 116,000 miles on it. Ran great up until i blew my last tranny, the only thing is its sat for awhile. Last time i started it was a little under a year ago. I just picked up a 99Z motor cause i wanted something a little younger and i dont plan on building it up. Id sell it cheap if your interested in a used motor for building up.
