I was having a hard time finding a 92-94 Z24 cavy for a boost project so i am looking into a 3rd gen. I am looking around and trying to research as best I can but the questions i have are still out there, the main one being which motor is the best to boost from stock to all out drag....being a boosted car of course. The idea setup would be a 5 speed for me as its going to be a semi-daily car / drag car, not a daily driver, more a weekend punisher. Is there problems with the 5 speed on boosted cars i have yet to uncover? Also what is the best setup for the 3rd gens? 2.4l with a 5 speed, with an auto, 2.2 with a auto...ect? Thanks in advance for any replies.
this will start a huge argument, so might wanna be careful. I have a done up 2.4 LD9 and I love it. Lots of torque, good drivablilty. But if you wanna make a weekend race car, keep in mind the ecotec has a better oiling system and has a cradle in the bottom end. (I don't know much about the 2.3, but you asked TC or ECO)
As with any engine swap, it will take work and money. More technology is being put into the ecotec engine I believe GM has a build book too. Owning an LD9 and having no complaints, I would still say for going with a drag car the ecotec may be the cheaper option. Buy a whole donor car and install everthing into a baseline 1995 J. (if you wanna do it cheaper)
If money is not an issue get an 2003 or newer, I believe in 2004 they raised compression on these engines too, so tuning will be a little more picky (may have been in 2005 too)
.
HP Tuners | Garrett T3/T04B | 2.5" Charge Pipes | 2.5" Downpipe | 650 Injectors | HO Manifold | Addco front/rear | Motor Mounts | HKS SSQV | Spec stage 3 | AEM UEGO Wideband | Team Green LSD | FMIC | 2.3 cams | 2.3 oil pump swap | 280WHP | Now ECOTECED
if i do go the route of a eco/2.4 id go with a whole set up...rods/pistons, drop her down to a 8.5, work the valvetrain, do some tranny work....did they ever come with lsd in the 3rds? and some supporting mods, afc/uego/egt to start a baseline tune to let me drive the car to a true tuner...then take it to f1 dyno in maine for a true tune....
why do you suggest the 95 shell? i was thinking of a 95/96 shell as its cheaper then the newer shells and it has a large aftermarket for suspension and such....no rice mods like 40 inch wings ect, ha, but this isnt to start a war, just the best starting point...also is the 2.2 eco a direct drop in for a 95 series car as far as supports go? or do i have to weld in new supports?
also i wanted to keep ac/heat but i heard that if you swap motors then you need to swap ALL parts, including heater/ac parts, if its that big a deal ill save the weight n drop the heat and such haha
anything 97 and above year. that way you can use HP tuners.
i see, any of the motors bullet proof...haha, also hows the mt trannys on the cars..., i think after consideration, it be better to buy a running complete car and work from there rather then buying a donor and a build car....also i did a little reading on hptuners....i come from the dsm scene as far as tuning as modding goes after my mustang and z24 2nd gen days go...and what we use is dsmtuners...probably a very similar tool im sure from what i see/read...
my bro has a heavly modded 1st gen and he uses dsm link (dsm tuners is a website). it is sorta like hp tuners. same concept. if you know your way around dsm link, that is a great start when getting into hp tuners and understanding it.
i see i see, are any of them better then the other or is it just if i went and picked up one its just going to be the same as if i went and picked up another j body to turbo...same build process of couse...because i was honestly just going to get the 2.4 due to the higher displacement and lower compression off the bat, but if im missing anything let me know..
