Another blown turbo eco....sadness
Thursday, July 06, 2006 5:41 PM
Well on my way to work today I gased it hit the usual 8 psi and let off. Went to get on the gas again and the car totally went ape @!#$ and started sputtering and my a/f ratios are in the 10's all the time. I can drive it but you can only get on the gas the littlest bit before it starts to shut down. Black smoke out the exhaust and some smoke coming from the back of the enigne by the turbo. Im not sure what happened but Im guessing I hurt something internally. Im going to get hte compression checked tomorrow and see what my engine guy says about it and im going to go from there. IM hoping its nothing major but with my luck the last couple weeks it gonna be something bad.

This is why I don't wanna do turbo and have opted to do the S/C instead next year...I just ehar WAY too many horror stories about these things ruining engines.

Sorry to hear it, Splash - your car is one of my favs. Hopefully it'll be an easy fix.

Its like they know you are voiding the warranty
like its windows genuine advantage but its like GM genuine performance advantage
the new computers know and shut you down!

doesnt sound like an internal problem more like an electrical issue. what supporting mods do you have for your turbo?

It sounds nothing like an electrical problem. It sounds like the ringlands blew apart just like the rest of us lately.

Dang this dont really make me optomistic about boosting mine, Im still thinking GM supercharger, sounds more reliable, unless i build internals right away...... hmmm.......

John H., did Airtronics ever determine the cause of the rod failure?

Just looking at Hypsy's pic's, I'd say the ring lands look a little close to the piston top, which would reatian the combustion heat in a smaller area. That and combined with a weaker material, seems to be causing the failure. Thats just from looking at the pics and reading these threads.

The power potential seems to be there, no problem, but the pistons just don't seem to be up to the task of handling much boost at all. The nitrous applications seem to be holding fairly decent, could be because of the cooler combustion chamber temps and/or reduced detonation from the colder nitrous.
