This is new to me....... another reason GM sucks

Not sure where this belongs but here it goes....

So yesterday I pulled my oil pan so I can could drill and tap it for the oil return line. So I get the pan, all the oil pan bolts looked clean, no distortion from being previously takin off or anything. I'm the olny person that works on my can with the exception of GM doing a clutch under warranty. So anyways I pull the pan down and here somethign metalis hit the side of it as its coming off. So I look and in the oil pan is a 3/8 drive Snap-On 5 mm heck socket. So my first thought ok it prolly rolled off of somewhere and fell in the pan while I was taking it out. So I clean it up and go to stick it back on my socket rail....... my socket is there..... and it dawns on me this isn't my socket.... the dealership never had the oil pan off for the clutch, it had to have been droped in at the factory or something!!!!!! Like I said noone works on it but me and I was never missing that socket.

are you sure it wasn't maybe left elsewhere in the engine bay by a mechanic and then rolled in when you pulled it off? Obviously its not yours but you know as well as i do if that thing had been in the pan that long havoc would have been wreaked a loooooooooooooonnnggg time ago. Obviously, if there's not a lot of nicks/scoring in the socket surface, no way was it really in the pan all that time.

i dont think there are any 5mm bolts in the engine.

maybe it fell in when you did cams on your car.....i think one of the tensioners is 5mm.
so it went in threw the top straight down.

arent the studs a 5mm on the end ?

it is kinda odd that you havent seen it stuck to the drain plug since it has a magnetic tip , and it should grabed the socket and help it

unless the socket was in a place it couldnt roll around it

but this isnt the first time ive heard of tools or items being left in a car , a teacher in college told me about striping a car to find a rattle and found a TIN beer can in the kick panel area , that could have only been put in there during the original assembly while going down the line at the plant

ive heard and seen tools , and other scrap items in doors and trunks

I've heard a ton of stories like this as well, when I worked for the Chevy Dealership. One of our service writers used to work for Saturn.... seems the Saturn Factory guys like to have fun. One saturn they found 98 194 bulbs in the stamped frame rails under the car...... a few others where found with 'messages' writen on the inside of the outer door skins......

I can picture a 5mm socket being in there for the ride.......

my autobody teacher told me of a ford explorer with a washer tied to fish string..then taped in the inner front fender so when somone would go around a corner or a bigger bump their would be a ping noise...took a shop forever to find it

A socket in the pan as like 10% of a chance to get in the crank area. The oil pump can't pump it. The socket is to heavy to go on top of the oil even under hard road condition. Also, the Snap On socket are not made of metal, they are probably made of SS and then chromed. Witch mean they don't stick to magnet.

I found a nice Snap On wrench in a Gm Allison 8.2L. One side was 14mm and the other 16mm. I found it in the valley pan. I found all kind of thing in engines: Wood, bolts in the oil pan, bolts in the head, ...

If you heard it ping into the oil pan, i doubt it was in there in the first place, probably fell into it. Maybe the tech dropped it and couldnt find it after, happens quite a bit. It probably just fell into the pan from wherever it was sitting when you removed it.

Well if it was in there maybe that is the reason for all of the tranny noises we hear

Maybe we should all go check it out and see huh?

Eh...old man with a Corvette now...it was bound to happen sooner rather than later right?

I've heard a story from some of my school auto teachers about a kid who brought his Ford in for a rattle that no shop could find. Well they tore apart the door panels and found a bottle in there with a note..."Rattles...Don't it? " Now that is something I would do if I worked at a plant. LOL.

I'm still trying to find the point of your post... gm sucks because?

Probably fell from elsewhere in the engine compartment who knows.

I've seen long zip ties around axles and drive shafts........ from the factory........ like once there was a tag on it, and someone never removed it....... they make some weird noises when driving

GM sucks because Ryan, like me, found something in the oil pan that shouldn't have been there. He found a 5mm socket and I found a few 4in long strings of aluminum that looked to be from when they drilled the inside of the pan for the pickup and baffle. These things don't belong in an oil pan.

Really? I typically throw my loose change down the oil filler neck.... guess I should stop?

I seriously doubt that socket was inside the pan, it's more likely that it fell from somewhere else into the pan.

personally i dont know the snap on guy you get your tools from , but every snap on tool ive got that is metal i can pick up with a magnet , so i know none of mine are made from stainless
