500 fwhp 2.4 is it possible?
Wednesday, June 07, 2006 10:36 AM
I want to know if it's possible to make 500 fwhp with a 2.4 TC with the folling setup:

New GM crank knife edged and lightened, Eagle rods, Wiesco 8.9 cr pistons with total seal rings, 2.3 oiling mods & Miller oil pan, 2.3 HO ported head & intake, custom turbo cams, T3 - 60-1 turbo & fmic, custom header or manifold, 550 cc injectors,HPT tuning and water/meth injection. Static cr approx 10.2:1 and 15 - 18 psi of boost.
Will this combo is make 500 hp at the flywheel, and if not what would it take?

I think 550cc injectors are a bit small for 500hp.

But if you hit 500, that would be a new record on the org.

bigger turbo...... bigger injectors..... more boost or N2O

Well let me ask another question what's a reasonable expectation for my combo, it's my daily driver so I don't want to big of a turbo with lag problems. What do you guys suggest for a turbo and injectors, the ad I saw for the Garrett turbo said it flowed enough air for 550 hp?

500 would be a little overkill on a daily driver. Not to mention, if you're running any variation of a stock 2.4 tranny, don't expect it to last. I'd say a healthy 350 would be in sight with that list you posted. If you don't already have all that stuff in you're possession, I would suggest downgrading that 60-1 to better suit your powerband

Blew it up, build numbers coming soon

I'm guessing 3-350hp to the wheels.......

350 whp isn't bad for a daily driver, would that be enough power to put a full weight Z24 with the J-body kit lsd good axles etc into the high 11's or low 12's?

No I haven't got the turbo yet what specific suggestions do you guys have, also what size injectors?

Jcavi - as far as a wish list, I'm just trying to get good info from folks that have already done it so I can avoid the pitfalls and mistakes already made. See I know that I can make the power I want and more if I want to spend the money to do so ( 95 Sunfire 625 whp), I just wanted to know what setups are already successfully in use so I can copy some things from everyone.
By the way how much hp does your setup make if you don't mind me asking?

Are you saying you have already built one of these? Or you know someone who had a 625whp sunfire? I hope you are not talking about the sunfire that was in one of those Muslce car mags a few years back. That was a joke. 350whp with a good driver and set-up would be good for easy 12's. Stock motor 2.4's have went high 12's already. there is a stock motor 2.4 in a race car doing 11's on less WHP.

Yes that's the one I'm referring to it was in Hotrod magazine back in 2002 or 2003. If you spend enough money in anything you can make it fly.

My other car is an 87 Monte Carlo SS with a 850 fwhp Procharged 383 in it.

Yeah that car never put that power down. The highest power for a 2.4 that has been proven was 410whp and 404wtq.

Damn. I can't believe that article is still out there misleading people.

That was Dom's car and the numbers were complete BS. It probably didn't make more than 300 hp and certainly didn't make the 600+ that was claimed.

Don't believe everything you read.

2 things..

1) I did not see 1 suspension mod on that list.. you gotta be able to be stable at your trap speeds as well as be able to launch a 500HP car. also a well built trans for sure.
2) if it were me (flame suit) id start with a 2.3 or eco rig over the 2.4l. at least a forged 2.3 crank. i know you clowns say the 2.4's is indestructable, but it can break. plus both of those platforms have been over 1000HP so you know where it can go. the eco even has a howto, and there are olds docs around for the quad.

so yeah, you want a 500HP J? cool, first you gotta batten down the hatches. the power isn't the problem, our engines are very nice in that regard. its getting the econoBox down the track in 1 piece, all while keeping traction.

Wow some of you guys are rough, if you look at the title it asks the question "is it possible", not the statement " Oh I'm gonna make 500 fwhp ".
It's a question, see I'm not used to working with such small motors, I come from the land of V8's where you can just fall down and make 500 na at the flywheel, so I don't know what's realistically possible that's why I asked.

Jbroz as for suspension mods my car has Tein Super Street coilovers, poly upper & lower engine mounts and trans mounts, subframe brace & custom frame connectors, Team Green LSD, front & rear strut braces and tubular lower a-arms. I also have a SPEC aluminum fw and stage II clutch.
I'm in the process of gathering the parts to build a new turbo engine and so far I have a brand new GM crank, Eagle H beam forged rods, 2.3 HO head & intake, new 2.3 oil pump windage tray and oiling system.

yeah man any mod you can do to stiffen your chassis is a good idea. maybe real nice struts and shocks and perches too. you'll need a much rougher clutch to handle that too. but looks like youve got a good start. 500HP is a good goal but go for 300HP first. make sure your parts are able to scale to 500 but work your way up and you'll see what you'll need. 3x stock power is a lofty goal. the problem around here is the $$ it takes to make power. most people give up and get a more able platform. as far as 4cyl's go we actually have it fairly well. not too much we can't do these days. we just have to do it.

big ol V8's can fall in on 500HP but its about equiv to run around in a 1500HP camaro daily driver.. get my drift. 500 cav will and can happen. hell as i've said gm has a build book for 400-600HP in an eco. take a peak. much of the same applies to the 2.4 but custom stuff is needed instead of part numbers..

500 fwhp 2.4 is it possible? Daily NO . If your gonna do all that then more power to you and I wish you the best , but the simple fact is 99 % of the people that post like this never do what they are planning. I am one of them . But I got smart and bought a home instead of continuing to dump money into the car. I stopped at 12K just so you know and my motor is stock bottom end. 3 trans' and multiple reconfigurations will do that.
