I am going to be turbo charging my Saturn Ion Redline. We have reached the mark on the M62 which gets us just under 300whp. I need to know whether the exhaust manifold ports and bolting is the same. I do know that the 2.0 Saab turbo setup would fit a 2002 ecotec. I am pretty sure that a manifold would bolt up,but want some opinions on it. thanx guyz.
Hey there, the 2003 and up Saab 93 turbo manifold and turbo would work great with your Ion. You'll have to make some custom IC pipes for the intercooler, but other than that, it's easy!

well actually i'm looking to push the 2.0 that is already in the car as far as it will go. I used to have the Saab turbo for my cavy,but sold it. I am looking at GMparts direct picture of the Extruded and honed exhaust manifold for my car and the turbo manifold on ebay it it looks the same as far as bolt and runner placement. Could anyone let me borrow a turbo manifold for the ecotec for the weekend!! lol

I believe hahn is making a twin charge kit for the Cobalts so they might have somthing for you .... i dont think its out yet but i was told they are thinking about it or have already made it... as well i remember on a Red line forum i was on for a bit a guy had a twin charged red line and was part of a shop who had a kit basically finished for the twin charged set up...

as i have that set up right now but i only wish i was making the power level you are... im only around 260whp @12-13psi into the engine... and thats probably all she will be as im kind of finished with this car now

With HP tuners it is sooooo good to own one right now. Being able to control the boost bypass and set it to diffrent gears to keep traction. I have talked to that guy a number of times. Everyone seems to be on hold since the new tunning has become available. I have been toying around with the idea of removing the supercharger, making an adapter to keep the water/air intercooler and just go turbo. I am wanting to just get a cheap log manifold setup to test the waters and some theory's. I know it will get me into trouble,but thats how we learn right??? Good thing i got the cavy as a daily driver. lol
Ooops, sorry I skimmed too quickly! Yes the bolts are the same. I'd get one of the Eco manifolds sold on Ebay. They're tough and long lasting since they're log style, so go for it! You're going to get some awesome numbers with the 2.0!
Well I hope to have it completed in time to go to the small car bash for some fun. Maybe break a few axles and a clutch. lol
if you're going to twincharge, use a better manifold than the saab... hahn's has been proven to near 500 hp, from looking at it, the saab mani would probably become a choke point. But yes, any eco turbo manifold should bolt to the head of your 2.0 just fine... whether it positions the turbo so it will clear the firewall, i'm not positive. But thats why sledgehammers and plasma cutters are made

I really don't think i'm going to be twin charging. I have 4-5 pages of calculations with and without. I think i'm going to go turbo with the water/air cooler first to try and mix it up. I am not going to use the saab manifold. I have seen Hahn's and looked very promising with the external gate on it. I am looking for power though. around 350-400 whp in order for this to be worth it. I am doing the calulations on some turbos and giving myself a headache in the process. Does anyone have any good choices. I have been looking at a 60-1,but am always open to some discussion. thanx for all the help and reply's.
hahn's mani will definitely flow well enough for your goal. As far as turbo choice, I've seen t3/t4 .50 trims putting down 340 to the wheels on a 1.8T and that was Mustang dyno numbers, dynojet would probably be 360-370... All depends on how good the tune is. Unfortunately, as fas as LSJ turbo setups go its hard to say since there aren't many around yet that aren't gm race cars... The t3/t4's have the advantage of being very cheap and easy to find, and also have a dual ball bearing center section available now... There are also the GT series turbos, which i'm not all that up on, but the GT30XXR series will have selections in the neighborhood of your desired power goal. Look up The Flying Squirrel's turbo matching thread and try plotting a few compressor maps for your setup.

The 60-1 is what seemed to be a good choice when i compared the compressor map. Heres what i got.
Air flow rate= cid x rpm x 0.5 x Voulmetric Efficiency

Airflow rate under boost = pressure ratio x basic engine CFM
My engine calculations at the current setup.
AFR= 3.39 x 7000 x 0.5 x 0.85 = 210 CFM

PR = 14.7+25 = 2.7

AFR with boost = 2.7 x 210 cfm = 567 cfm
With the pressure ratio and Airflow i can map it on the compressor maps and it looks like a 60-1 would be good for what power i'm looking for.
There are some numbers that needed to be slide over to underneath the equations.
That turbo might be okay at redline, but how much time are you spending there? You need to find a turbo that is good around your peak torque rpm. Make a speadsheet to help you plot out points every 1000 rpm (remember that boost and VE values will be different at different rpm). This will give you a better picture of how each turbo will respond in the real world. I'd suggest the 50-trim t04e myself.
