goal: to lower IAT temps due to 2.7 pulley, black car, hot weather, and the fact that i dont want to use alky injection. and leave the battery in the front of the car.
original: modified AEM short ram intake.
so, after thinking about this for a while, i decided (credit to lafngas's picture) do a custom cai. this was done by sliding and angling the battery tray (all the wires are long enough) and doing a few bends into the fenderwell. i said it was short ram because it is about 12" smaller than the long U bend around the battery cai (and has less bends), and cai because, well u know. it has three slight bends, and then a single 90 degree bend at the end. i'm still debating whether to cut a hole in the bottom of the fender liner, so it can get more fresh air, but i wonder how much dirt/dust/rocks/rain/overall crap might get in there with the filter.
anyway, on w/ the pix. and remember, this is a posterboard mock up, im gonna try to get an exhaust shop to bend me either aluminum or steel piping, either 2.75 or 3, whatever they have. one piece of course
and the fun part was this, boy was taking hours to drill out the pinch welds fun. i ended up holding it down by three bolts, i wanted to put a fourth, but it wouldve gone directly into the main frame, which isn't accessible for a nut underneath. that, and its probably thick as hell metal. overall, it holds the battery just fine and securely, but obviously the original location is stronger.
oh and ps - the "striaght down from the tb" doesn't work for two reasons: 1) on the auto tranny, there are two hard lines that get in the way, and 2) i find that the air thats coming off the radiator fan is hot as hell.
oh, and some of the metal in the fender area has to be modified, along with having to somehow (i haven't figured this out yet, but i have a good idea) of hacking up the washer fluid filler neck if you wanna keep the reservoir. and dont worry, the blinker fluid bottle doesn't have to be moved.
feel free to comment

you can actually make the pipe alot straighter , but you would prob have to move some of your aftermarket stuff
also your going to want to make up a plate to fill in where the washer bottle used to be , to keep air from the hot side of the radiator getting to the filter
and straight down does work ive got 3" tubing on mine , actually its the way my HO inake was done , and with my s/c ive got the filter in the same area you are putting yours , by using 2 90 bends and a 45
my plan is to do mine more like yours but doing straight pipe , and my batt will be in the trunk

1) easier said than done
2) washer bottle is staying there
3) it was a little too tight w/ the hard lines there, and i didn't want to move the washer bottle.
4) yellow tops look prettier in the engine bay

I think you should just use the posterboard
........but seriously it looks good so far man.........WHat made you change your mind?
Oh and also when are you coming to my house and doing that for me? If you get an exhaust shop to make you a pipe maybe I'll get one from ya too
Car is for Sale!Supercharger kit is for sale!
Are you plannning on using that sharp 90 degree into the fenderwell, or a mandrel? Otherwise looks real good.
15.3 @ 89.97mph, 14's on the way?
ian - all the bends will be mandrel bent, and yes i will be using a 90 degree at that corner, its the only way. obviously though, it will be a rounded 90 degree, i just didnt feel like cutting out 10 little shapes out of posterboard to create that "rounded" shape.

i think your going to find that its not going to make much of a dif for intake air temp with the S/C. mebbe a degree or 2. nothing close to what the alky could do.
well i saw intake temps drop from 200 + degrees to low 100's before i installed my s/c , at a cruise speed on the freeway in 110 degree weather
so it will drop the temps down quit a bit
true water or alky will drop it even more , but he said he wasnt up for that
looks good.
i contemplated this idea, but didnt want to move the battery.
so i got the stock S tube, and the RK cold air extension peice, plastic/ rubber dont soak up heat as much as a almunim pipe would.. now the s/c is cold. A M4 water/meth injector helps tons too.
i used to have the intake straight down from the t/b and you are right it got hot.
i say use water injection, you will be happy.
