well i bought this turbo:
my turbo
anyways i got it and the shaft seem to wiggle a bit. i'm not sure how much play there should be. any thoughts?
also it has the ford housing on it and it has a 2 bolt flange on the compressor outlet, it's also about 1 3/4" wide opening. will this thing work for my car. i wish he would have posted better pics of it.
man i think i got screwed on this one.

forgot to expand on it working for my car thing. what i meant to ask was: is the comp. opening a normal size that i would connect 2.5" piping to?
also a t3/t4 is it the exhaust or the compressor side the t4? will i need a t4 flange to bolt to my manifold then?
thanks in advance.
so sorry for loading the forum with questions.

On a T3/T4, the exhaust is a T3, compressor is a T4.
Depends on how much play there is on the shaft, some is ok, since the oil will make the shaft float, but if it gets to contact the housing, then its bad.
The opening is about right, mine is about 1.5" or something, you just need to find a reducing coupler to be able to connect whatever size pipe to it that you want.

Buy stuff from CarCustoms Ebay! Won't be disappointed!
that is what i thought exactly. just wanted to check. thanks for the help. i told the tech at the dealer i work at that the shaft would float in oil and he told me no. but the turbines don't touch the housing at all so i think i am okay. this is my first turbo project and i just want to do it right the first time. so i think i got a good deal then

if it was rebuilt I don't understand how there would be ANY shaft play....
I have a t3/t4 sitting around that I destroyed the compressor wheel on and there STILL is no shaft play...

hmmm. no i am semi-concerned. i dunno if i should just try and get my money back or what. there is a tiny bit of play when you push the shaft in and out. and a bit of play when you wiggle it. my real problem is that this is my first turbo i have ever held in my hands so i'm not sure what is accetable. i mean it spins really smooth and all.

That's the same turbo I had on my LN2, you'll love it (although, you paid WAY too much for it IMO).
A little shaft play is okay as said. What direction is the play in, and can you measure how much there is?
If you end up using it, with a log manifold, get the Ford O2 housing. It will make your downpipe construction a LOT easier (but you probably won't be able to use the O2 sensor port, or the hood wont close).
Also, you can grind away at the compressor outlet flange to shape it like a standard coupler outlet (basically just chop off the section of the flange with the mounting holes).

i was just planning on cutting off the tabs and shaping it a bit. . i will try and measure the play. when i look at the end of the shaft and push it the whole way in one direction and then in the opposing direction it is no more than 1/8" at most. but when i look at the fins it is less than 1/16"

1/16" is a LOT. Does it play in/out at all?

iirc when we rebuild turbos at work .002" to .004" is acceptable with brand new bearings. Thats strictly garrett o/h instructions we have to follow.
just an update: i had emailed the guy and told him about it and he sent me the money for the rebuild kit. i think i got a fair deal in the end.

a little shaft play is normal, like what steve fire said, it should be around 4 thou, so basically 4 thou on each bearing will give you 8 thou, and with a longer shaft, small amounts can seem like alot, if they are not touching, get the rebuild recipt and you should have their warranty

Thats not even a t3/t4. It's a straight t3..
Blew it up, build numbers coming soon
ya know i was just about to post that. i just realized that altogether. . crap. i wanted a t3/t4.. .oh well. what am i gonna do. i will use it for now and get used to turbo and all that and then upgrade later.. man that guy was nutz..

This turbo is going on your car with the ohv? If so, its fine. It's even fine for a 2.4 or eco if you're looking to make decent power, but not go crazy. I ran that turbo on my 2.4 last season and layed down a solid 250whp. I'd say I could have made 280ish before I started throwing it out of its efficiency range. Just rebuild it and run it if it's really that bad.

Just another thing to point out. The exhaust turbine housing around the wastegate port has been welded back together in two spots. This suggests that the turbocharger overall is fairly old and that there were some hairline fractures along the housing.
