GM S/C Installed, having issues
Friday, May 26, 2006 9:30 AM
Well I installed the GM S/C on my car last weekend. I brought it in to get flashed, and it was running like crap on my way in. The tech's managed to reflash the comp, fix a few problems, and now the car is running, however, she's idling at 4000 RPM. WTF is going on. Its costing me 80$/hour on labour, and they are having issues figuring it out.

Ill elaborate a little. The install went as smoothly as I expected with a few mishaps. My friend who was helping me install the blower ripped the primary 02 sensor wires out of their connector. That has been solved. He also ripped the EVAP Purge solenoid wires out of their connector as well. That has been solved as well. Apparently there was a misfire on #2, the spark plug boot wasnt on properly, that has been solved. In my kit, which i bought used from Qwik2k2z24, I didn't have the Evap Vaccuum Line, we made one out of some air hose we had laying around. I doubt this is causing any issues. Also, my friend was taking the 2 bar map sensor off the tb, because I told him i needed the stock map sensor on until the reflash. While taking it off, he snapped the sensor. 300$ later, I got a new map sensor, and its on the car and the car has been flashed with the proper VCI# for manual transmission.

As you can see, quite a few little problems happened and have been solved. Although, im totally confused as to why the car is idling at 4000 rpm. I still dont have premium gas in my car, I have approximately 1/3 of a tank of regular gas. I doubt that would cause the car to idle so badly. The car is running way to rich. Can anyone help?

this might be a wild shot..but i'd suggest looking at the throttle cable and/or the throttle stop

and try to look into the IAC

Are you sure the new sensors are wired properly? Just thinking maybe a wire is crossed and could be sending the wrong signal. I know I have had no problem with mine. Even on regular gas the car didn't act funny at all.

idling at 4000 rpm = vacuum leak... a big one. Your car runs off of air and the computer compensates with fuel. There is no level of sensor failures or anything else that could make the air come out of nowhere and help burn fuel. Look around for a disconnected vaccuum line... Usually that wont let it idle so high but with the blower it may a vacuum leak to have more of an effect. If your brake pedal is stiff, it is the booster line. A good trick is to throw a tiny bit of flour in the air and watch where it gets sucked in it.

Well Kris, first of all, you shoulda got Bill and I to install it on your way home, we know how to work on cars, unlike your friend that seems to know next to nothing.
I would definately say that it is a vacuum leak, a BIG one at that.

Well, apparently there was no Vaccum leak whatsoever. The techs are claiming they think its my PCM. They are replacing it as a warranty issue. Im just wondering, how the hell is this possible? Why would my PCM be fine for 4 years, then they touch it and all of a sudden I have a bogus PCM? I have to call the BS flag on this one. I have a feeling that they probably screwed the PCM when they flashed it. Im very upset because now I have to cancel a show this weekend, and I have a 1000$+ bill for labour. It took them over 12 hours of labour at 80$/h to diagnose this. WTF took them so long?

Its not easy to find diagnose and find a problem like this. I was thinking though, you sure the blower is right up to the block and sealed properly? Because I know the bottom 2 bolts are a royal pain in the ass to tighten proplery. Also, did you put that little cap on the throttle body to cover up the vacuum port?

1000$ bill. damn that sucks.

?= did all the s/c brackets line up when you installed it?

and who the hell is your friend? sounds like a idiot.

this is a easy install, follow the directions and pictures and you are good to go. basically like changing your intake manifold.

wtf, the install was really easy.. my friend is no idiot, we did everything fine, trust me, i take offence to what you guys are saying about him. we followed directions to a tee. we did have trouble tightening the bottom 2 bolts, but we got them tight, and yes we put a cap on the TB where it was needed. they claim its the pcm, they are changing it as a warranty problem, even though the warranty is well passed due. Ill find out later this week when the new pcm is installed I suppose.

pcm warrenty is 7/70 or 8/80 depending where you live

and if your friend did that kinda damage to your car , then in all honestly , he shouldnt be touching anything

ripping the primary o2 wires out , when they are on the back side in a area you shouldnt be in , the evap i can kinda understand , but still a thing that shouldnt have happened

it takes alot of pulling to rip the wires outta the conntectors , and i do mean ALOT

4000 rpm idle can be anything , iac stuck open , throttle/cruise cable pulling the tb open , tb itself stuck open , a sensor giving the pcm false info

Disconnect your throttle and see what it does.

well today I went to see my car in the dealership parking lot to check out a few things. And what do i immediately find, a vaccuum tube disconnected. The vaccuum tube that is supposed to travel from the little outlet on the TB side of the S/C that goes to the Head side of the TB. It wasnt connected at all, how the hell did they miss that, and the 2 bottom bolts on the S/C (where the studs were) seem as though they could be tightened more. I will have to talk to the dealership tomorrow and ask how they missed that vaccum hose in their 12 hours of labour

Doesnt mean taht they didnt unplug it........trust me...dealership mechanics arent dumb as you portray them to be.....Not to start a fight here, but, the install of the gm charger is simple, like some1 up there said, like changing an intake manifold. Im pretty sure anyone with half a brain let alone an ASE certified tech would know if something was idling high like that, they would check all vac. lines, think a little before you blame someone for your/your friends screw up. I would also like to know how the hell you pull wires out of a connector? Really, there arent any wiring connectors on the 2.4 that are that hard to get at or get apart for that matter. But anyway, I would look at those things they mentioned ^ there.

Oh I agree that pulling the wires out of the connecters is pretty damn hard to do. The only explanation I can give for his antics are that he is 6'4 240 lbs, big boy who cant fit his hands anywhere. And yes, the dealership did unplug a few lines and connectors when I went to check on the car. As it is now, im not going back to the dealer until the call me and say the new ECU is in and yada yada. Ill just trust them, pay my bill, and then go rob a bank.

Well, I hope the best of luck to you, and robbing a bank may get you in more trouble than any cavalier could get you in

Whoops, you have a sunfire. Alright, let me rephrase. Robbing a bank may get you in more trouble than any J-BODY could get you in.

being that it is used...... did you make sure there where o-rings around the intake ports? I know the tend to compress, or even fall out while not installed.......

to me, it does sound like a Vac. leak...... either s/c to head, t/b to s/c, or the brake booster line.....
